TO30-Z129 rocker arm oil problem revisited

After careful consideration (looking at the manual) I have come to the conclusion that the camshaft journals are worn enough to not have enough pressure to send oil up through the ports. (Still has 30 lbs. on the gauge) The book says to 1. replace block... 2. have block bored and install "bushings". Hmmm, sounds like a lot of work for a tractor that will now get maybe one hour on it a year. Does anyone know why there is a plug at the back on the head that leads to the oil lines to the rockers? I had this great idea that maybe I could tap into the pressure side of the oil pump and run a line to that plugged hole. That would put us in business. Any comments? I already know what some of you are thinking...

I believe the plug in the back of the head was installed after the machineing operations on the head at the factory. Before I would make up the external oil line I would pull the plug and start the engine to see if you have oil to that point. Seems odd to me with 30 lbs. of oil pressure you can't get some oil to the rockers. Please post when you get it figured out. Good luck.

Duner, pulled plug and ran engine--it's dry! Ran platic tie down there to camshaft and doesn't seem to be plugged either. Next step is to hook up IH oil pressure gauge and see how it registers.

Wes,
If you could either post your email address or email me so I can return a message, I can send you a photo of what was done to mine. Basically, the guy before me tapped into the side of the block above and over from the oil filter and plumbed up to the back of the head. My engine is in the machine shop right now, so I took some pics to help me put things back together.
Since I'm too dumb to post photos on this site, I don't know how else to show you.
Chuck

You know, Triumph car parts suppliers sell an external oil feed for the top end, that screws into the hole for an oil gallery plug in the block and then screws into the oil gallery plug spot in the head. This external line (braided stainless steel, I believe) provides more than adequate oil for the top end, particularly when there simply isn't enough pressure to feed the rocker assembly. Basically, all you need to do is find the appropriate fittings and high-pressure line to hook it up, maybe the Triumph parts will fit!

Larry, thanks for the suggestion! I believe I will do expoloratory surgery soon. That flex line is a good idea. Do you have a Triumph? I've worked on my friend's TR6 quite a bit. It's a 1971 so it still has all the guts BL meant it to have. Wes

Ahhh! TR6's. I know them well.

Actually the oil feed you're describing comes from the factory port for the oil pressure switch or gauge, I believe. I could be wrong but I've seen the oil line to gauges plumbed from this point.

If you don't have pressure at the rear of the head where the galley is plugged you may not have oil going to your cam journals. Watch out!
