My tractor has been running fine, but recently will only run with choke out. I have pulled the carb, cleaned it out, pulled sediment bowl. I recently put points and plugs, distributor cap and wires. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had that problem and solved it by running a slender wire through the main jet orifice in the carburator to get the varnish/crud out of a very small opening.

Check your throttle shaft for looseness , it may need bushings , same thing happened to my Ferguson

Mike I had the same concern I pulled carb off and cleaned and rebuilt but still did not run right
took carb back off and took to a small engine shop
they took it apart again and soaked it for 24 hrs in a strong carb cleaning solvent .
replaced all the gaskets again and reinstalled
Bingo it worked like a top and more power then it ever had.

Hey Mike

Three things I would check
1. Is the carb getting enough fuel

2. Try adjusting the power jet on the carb. Search this site for more info on the proper adjustment procedure.

3. Check for air leaks on the intake manifold

Mike are you opening the fuel shut off knob enough? If I get in a hurry and open mine only a couple of turns that isn't enough to keep it running. As trivial as it sounds I had to bring it up. Secondly, do you have a good supply of gas reaching the carb? Could be fuel line is restricted somewhere, or float setting is off. If you need carb adjustment recommendations holler I have a couple of manuals here. Wes

Like Wes said, check for adequate fuel flow. The fuel shutoff knob has a reserve feature, two full turns open accesses the main tank, completely open accesses the one gallon reserve fuel storage. This is accomplished by a stem atop the sediment bowl assembly, the screen on the stem may be blocked, corroded, etc.

I had problems like that with mine but strangely enough it wasn't the fuel line, sediment bowl, or carb. It was the fact that it had over a pound of nuts, bolts, and washer's in the bottom of the tank. They clogged up the sediment bowl strainer and eventually nocked gaily-west and destoyed it. I then had the head rebuilt, carb reworked, etc. Now just awaiting a grill, and good weather!
