I recently purchased a '50 T020, Serial No. 17717. It ran but needed some work. Pulled the head and dropped the pan. The head looked pretty good, some carbon build up in ports. Was able to lap the valves in by hand. Then I dropped the pan to find the retainer of a Novi ball type governor in pieces... This Fergie should've had a fly-weight type governor originally. I believe the ball type is used as a replacement for the fly-weight type but a spacer needs to be used(?) in models like mine. If this spacer was not used, would it be the cause of the governor coming apart? I haven't pulled the timing cover yet, but I presume the balls are still held in by the race.

I also noticed before teardown, that the distributor seemed to wobble slightly with changes in engine speed... would this be caused by excessive camshaft endplay?

Well after opening up the timing cover, I recovered nine of the balls from the Governor... It's a mystery what happened to the tenth one, unless it rolled out of sight and I just haven't found it yet. Or maybe someone put it together this way and figured it would work 90%!!!

I had excessive endplay in the camshaft, but found that the nut was stripped. Figure I will replace the Thrust Plate along with the nut.

What's the TRICK TO GETTING THE CAMSHAFT OUT for inspection? If it is a matter of followers, how does one manage to get them all up and keep them there? I don't plan on seperating the engine so it could be turned upside down!

The info I have says you need a washer between the cam gear and gov. drive if your tractor had the flyweight gov. from new. washer part # is Ferguson #12 CH 208 and is about 1/16 inch thick. I don't know if tractors with Novi ball gov. from new had this washer. Seems very odd your dist. would wobble under any conditions I can think of. Pull it out and see if it turns freely. Check the end play of cam when you have the timing cover off. Good luck!

You could have play in the shaft that is causing the movement in the distrubitor. I don't think it would be the camshaft. I have the same engine set/up you have all disasembled from a 1950 TO-20 I was parting out. It has the Fly-Weight Govenor also not the Ball type. Bits of my govenor where likewise found in the oilpan. Most of the books do not show a postmarket replacement for the old weightstyle govenor. An older fellow told me the govenor from the TO-30 fits the TO-20. He was right. The ball style worked fine - no problem. I got one used off the internet for $25.

The tractor is not usable without the govenor.
