I just purchased a 51 To20 that was not running. It had only ran once in the last three years and that was six months ago. They said everything worked. I got the tractor running great but the hydraulics wont lift at all. The pto works perfect.I pulled the hydraulic ram and piston assy. out of the tractor but I don't know what to look for or if I jumped the gun on pulling it a part.

Thanks to all for the follow ups. The hydraulics are working great, or maybe I should say great for a TO 20. They sure are un-controlable compared to my 8N. I think I need to purchase the Zane position control if I plan on doing anything but plowing with it.

It could have been that the control valve was just stuck. You did jump the gun a bit. If you pulled the top without disconnecting the "T" of the control valve you may have broken the control valve shaft. If you have you may have to fish it out of the pump with a magnet or even may have to pull the pump to find the pieces. You can just leave the broken pieces in the pump and it will not cause any harm if you can find a new shaft etc. but it is best to get the old parts out. It is possible to weld or braze the control valve stem/shaft back together is you have broken it.

Check the return spring too for tension. The one that looks like a screen door spring. It must have enough tension to move the control valve it the valve will be easy to stick.

I also have developed a live hydraulics attachment that works wonders on the Ferguson system lift. Don't even have to have the PTO engaged and the lift will work just like it did from the factory with the touch control handle. No drilling or modifying of any part of the tractor. Works on the Ferguson, 9N/2N/8N Ford too.

Joel, I've experienced this problem on my own T20 and found the problem simply to be the pump jammed with old solidified oil, cleaning the pump solved the problem immediatly. However, I was informed that another possible cause is a faulty pump unit. I know its costly to buy an exchange unit, but generally these should last forever. Taking it out was the only solution and I suggest a wash in a parrafin bath.

ALSO CHECK THAT THE CONTROL VALVE IN THE PUMP HAS NOT BROKEN
