OK, I'm rebuilding my TO30 and I've bought the rear axle seals. I've got the axle assembly out and have replaced the inner seal, but the outer seal is a pain. My I & T Manual says to drill the bearing collar off of the rear axle shaft and remove the bearing and then remove the axle from the axle retainer assembly. Well, I've drilled the collar off, now what? I can't get the bearing off of the shaft? If (and when) I do get the bearing off, do I have to replace the bearing collar? Any ideas? Thanks.

The outer seals on my TO-30 were pretty much shot . I got the retaining collar off by drilling and splitting like the book says . Tried a 20 ton press to press off the bearings . No luck . I probably would have broken the bearing retaining housing if I had continued . I wound up heating the bearing with a torch . I very quickly pounded the end of the axle on a scrap aluminum plate setting on a concrete floor . She came right off then . I did not have to heat the bearings much to get it to expand enough to break loose ( maybe 200 deg. or so ) . Watch the heat and you won't hurt anything . My old bearings should be good for another 50 years .

You will have to put on new collars but they are less than $ 10.00 ea. if I remember right .

Well since the To-30 bearings are packed with grease you probably don't have to replace the outer seals. the inner seals should keep the differential oil from leaking out. The outer seals would have to get pretty bad not to hold grease. It is hard to get bearings off a shaft without destroying them. Try putting a piece of plywood or board on the floor and pounding the axle end on it. Might work, usually don't. You will have to put new bearing collars on. They have to be heated and driven or pressed on.

Thanks guys! I had to heat mine quite a bit, but they eventually came off. Once I get these replaced, the next guy can replace these seals 50 years from now when I'm pushing up daisies! Thanks again! KLR
