PTO seal revisited TO-30

Need to replace seal in TO-30. Is this straight forward or is there any thing I should know before starting? Are there any inbound parts that will fall out of place? Is there a snap ring type retainer involved-in other words-will the shaft pull out by hand or is a slide hammer needed? as always THANKS Dave

A snap ring holds the shaft and the bearing housing together, remove the 4 housing bolts and the shaft should come out by hand pressure. Like Mark said work it to and fro if the shaft hangs. The bearing is a press fit on the shaft after you remove the retaining ring holding the bearing in the housing. If you only replace the seal on the original 1 1/8" splined shaft, the bearing can remain on the shaft. If you have a replacement shaft with the 1 3/8" splines, you'll need to remove the bearing to replace the seal. The oil capacity is 6 gallons-use a container to hold it and remove all 3 drain plugs to remove any water/crud in each section. Remember what Mark said and don't force anything. For easy reassembly, don't move the tractor at all so the shaft will slide through the hyd. pump and into the trans. easily.

The job is easy if you drain the case down to stop it from pouring out the PTO Shaft hole when you un/bolt it. Take the 4-bolts out and just slide it out. If it don't come out DO NOT use a hamer work it back and forth to clean off the spline of crud if that don't work you have a job layed out for yourself. You can't pull the pump till you get it out so you will have to access it from the side or top. If you pound on it you might damage the pump. All the ones I have pulled just slid out but I have heard of them sticking too. Mark H.
