12-Volt converted TO-30 with a single pole alt.never did show much of a charge(2 amps). Conversion was completed by previous owner with ballast resister, diode, and retaining 6-volt coil. Today there was not enough battery to turn over. How can the system be checked this side of removing the alt.? What tells the alt.to charge? Finally is the other type of GM alt. a better more dependable way to go? thanks Dave

I know that you have already checked this but I'll mention it any way. I was having difficulty with my TEA not charging properly, and I checked connections, checked voltages and every other thing I could think of, no luck I couldn't find the problem. Then I checked the fan belt, it was just loose enough to slip under a load, but the alternator looked like it was spinning just fine. I tightened up the belt and have had no problems since.

Al.

I would buy the less expensive three-wire model for a Chevy truck and not worry about it. I've had no problems with my set-up and it charges at low rpm.

Dave, I've had my TO30 since 1990 when Dad sold it to me. He bought it new in 1953, and I still remember being with him. Anyway, the tractor is all original and the 6V system has never failed to start the tractor unless he or I failed to perform the proper upkeep. A 6V system is just as reliable as a 12V system if both are properly maintained. I suggest restoring the 6V system and eliminating your problem. Just my opinion!

Ray, Since I do not have a generator available I will try the other GM alt. to keep costs to a minimum. What wiring changes are needed for the s1 3 wire delco? thanks again

check on the left side of the board at "articles" under RESEARCH & INFO look for step by step 12 volt conversion.it will tell you how and give a wiring diagram.

I am finding that the one wire alt.that is sold at napa is not very reliable, and about to the point of not using them anymore.i have talked customers into using them, and then have to put on two or three before i have one that charges prperly.the voltage regulator inside the alt.senses the amount of voltage in the battery at the batt pole of the alt.and is supposed to make it charge the proper amount.you could replace it with a SI 3 wire delco

Upon looking again at my ampmeter I'm showing "zero" charge. Is it possible the alt. needs to be re-excited, could this possibly cure my problem? Dave

Dave; A altinator dose not need exciting, you do that to a Generator only. Mark H.

Jumped from P1 on alt. to battery the alt. began to charge (30 amps) slowly fell to 20 amps FRIED fuse. Replaced with 20 amp fuse restarted- same thing occured(30amps-20 amps Fried fuse). What amp fuse should be used and why did alt.need to be excited? Now where from here? Dave

Where is the fuse on a to-20? I was not aware there was one. Is it the same for the to-30?

If you are useing a 30 amp fuse and your alt. can exceed that in power and the battry needs it because of a low charge you will blow the fuse. Size the fuse to the rating of the alt. It could be you have a alt. that can put out 30-50 amps of charge rate. You can get large fuses called circuit breaker types but most of the time there is no fuse off the charging circuit, the fuses are used to protect wiring after it leaves the switch like going to lights, coil and assorys and they are on the fuse. Just for the record when I jumped from the P1 terminal to the battery it was for a split second not permanant connection. Just wanted to get correct information out as to not confuse every one who is trying to help. Thanks

the alt.you have is at least 55 amps and could be as many as 85 amps.the one wire alt.is supposed to excite itself.and all alts.have to be excited one way or another.once it is excited using the p1 term.it will charge until you turn the tractor off

TwoPop,
I too, have had problems with the single wire altertnator purchased at Car Quest. As a matter fact, I took my alternator back after the warranty period, and Car Quest gave me a new one refurbished by a new carrier. The new alternator has a dust filter of sorts on it and just looks to be made better. Car Quest told me that they changed vendors and the new vendor has agreed to "make things right" with the people who bot the
other alternators. I have had no problems with
the new alt so far.
