I just put on a new temp. gauge (I accidently cut the wire on the old one several months ago). Here is the problem I am having. I got it all hooked up and ran the TO30 for a while. The gauge just barely moved off of 130 degrees. I then shut off the tractor and looked at the gauge and it went up to close to 170. Started the tractor again, and the temperature went back down to 130. Shut it off and the gauge goes back up to 170. What is going on? I thought I might have the thermostat in backwards ( I put new hoses and thermostat on the tractor after I ruined the old gauge). Could that be it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Michael Williams

Hi Michael

Running temperatures seems too low may be your new thermostat is defective
or is out of range.

Normal working temperature should be 170 to 190 F
if engine temp is too low you will have incomplete
gas combustion bad odors from exhaust air pollution accumulating carbon deposits in engine...
engine oil will become black rapidly. It is normal that coolant temperature goes up when stopping engine.

Just my 0.02 cents

you are fine. Whenever a motor gets shut off the hot motor will continue to warm up the water for a while because without the motor running the water isn't circulating thru the radiator. If you have a temp guage in your car, watch it while it's running. Shut it off for about a minute then just turn on the key enough to activate the guages without starting the car. YOu'll see it goes up too.

I cant find a water temp sensor that fits in the threaded hole in the water pump housing. Were can I find one narrow enough to fit?

I really dont want to start drilling these castings.

Frank, I got mine at the Massey-Ferguson dealer. It is a generic model, The sensor fit just fine. I appreciate all the comments. I will check out the thermostat and make sure I have it in right, or get another one. Thanks for all the help!
