OK, I have read back over the archives and such, so I have an idea about this and I REALLY don't think I'm gonna like what I hear, but here goes anyway. I have a TO 20 with which I am having some trouble. Last summer I was bush hogging when I noticed that the deck level kept dropping. I would raise it up a little, then a few minutes later, same thing until finally it dropped as low as it could and refused to raise at all. Fluid level was a little low, so I added fluid hoping that would do it, but didn't help. Prior to this (for years) the deck would slowly drop when the tractor was shut down so I know that there has been some leakage going on there, but it is kaput now? I REALLY don't want to have to tear the whole thing down to do some repairs, I had just put a water pump on the tractor the week before this happened, so I am a little disgusted about the whole thing. I only use it to bushog several times a year so I really don't want to drop alot of time and money into getting it going. I know this is a Ferguson board and most of you are fans of the tractors, but would I be better off selling and if so, any ideas on what to expect for a mid 50's TO 20 that otherwise runs good and has good metal?

You can fix it! I have pulled a few pumps and top plates it is not that hard just messey with all the fluids (about 5 gals worth) I have everything you need to replace everthing for 300.00 but you might not need everthing. It may be a bad piston, relife valve or worst case a bad pump, cracked or maybe worn out. you may have knocket the control arm off tthe pump valve too. you need to drain everthing and pull the PTO shaft to get the pump out. You need to pull the top plate first. It is not that bad. You could haft to work on the transmission and haft to split it in three parts if you want a hard job. Mark H.

Your right disconect the fork from the pump valve first thru the cover hole the dipstick is in. And check to make sure the pump is tight first and check the gaskit between the plate and the piston/cylinder. Check the BOOK TOO. This is only a few word compaired on how the rightit up to do it. like mark said you can fix it but mark missed one thing check the little gasket on the top cover of the lift piston its in side the top cover.the last 2 i fixed this was all it was about 1.25 in parts. the 4 bolts that hold the piston like ot come loss and the gasket will blow out

No, I don't want a hard job, being that I'm lazy! splitting it was one of the things I really wanted to avoid. I have already drained all the fluids and removed one of the side plates, so I'm that much ahead. I just know that it looks really complicated in the shop manual and I don't like complicated. Did I mention that I'm really lazy?

I have never used the manual for this job befor. I did not have one the first time. I have one for the information and sortal just look how it goes to gether and never forse anything. Reading on how to take something apart takes longer than doing the job sometime. When they tell you how to turn the screwdriver I just give up. I like the pictures HA HA! After all the oil out it gets easier to do. Putting it back in is harder. You can get the fork back on thru the inspection plate hole. The top plate remove only the outside bolts the 4 in the middle holds the ram/piston onto the plate. before you remove the top plate you should un-screw the upper 3-point end first or you won't be able to remove the big outside spring that is over the part hooked to the control arm inside the cavity under the top plate that works the pump valve. It is just easier to take off when the plate is bolted on. After you remove the top plate you will know why. Good luck and keep us posted. Email me if you need a part. Mark H.
