Overdrive on a TO-30?

I have a 1953 TO-30 with a lever on the right side of the transmission, just behind the engine block. The guy that I bought it from said it was the overdrive lever. When I drove it with the lever engaged, ground speed was greater in all four gears than in the disingaged position. I have never heard of a TO-30 with overdrive before this. Does anyone have any information?

You may have the 2-speed or the 3-seed combination one. If when you are in the middle of the shift on it and can pull the lever out and shift it again you have the 3-speed one. I have the 3-speed on mine and it gives you 12-forward gears and 3-reverse gears. Mark H.
