Say Bob;

Doesn't that automotive type thermostat sort of rattle and bang around in the housing a little? When I was redoing my Super C last fall I got an adapter from my Case/IH dealer to allow using the modern style therm. It is just a steel collar to take up the excess space, and I thought it might be a good idea at the time . . .

Auto Zone P/N 800-180 thermostat also fits and works perfectly. It's priced at $2.99 - about $15 less than the C-IH 'stat.

Found also that red RTV gasket maker works fine in place of a gasket. Simply scrape both gasket faces clean, apply a thin layer of RTV to one of the faces then bolt it up.

The gasket maker does work well..... REALLY well... I just finished restoring my '41 Case SC and had to use it on the water pump gasket areas, I couldn't find gaskets, and I used it on the starter, and the fuel bowl,line,oil gauge, and other small things, just so they wouldn't leak... I don't have any leaks except for the brakes, but now they don't leak anymore, I think it's because they haven't been used in 8 years.... I would like to post a pic, but don't have a scanner.... I have an audio clip of it, but don't know how to post it, if anyone does, then please tell me!!

Yessir John. A 160 degree thermostat. IH part number is 387533R91. Thermostat housing gasket is 45102D.

NAPA part number for the thermostat is 28THM. You can buy blank gasket material from them and make you own.

You are welcome. If the original IH thermostat is still in that housing, you might have to poke a hole in it and literally pry the old one out. If you are lucky, it has probably already been replaced. The old unit is a long assembly but the replacement will be a typical looking car like thermostat. Good luck!
