I'm looking at a TD24 with 8 speed transmission.(No power shift) What should I be watching for when I test drive the machine? What is a reasonable price for this tractor? (Possibly 1957-anyone know the serial nunber sequence for this type of machine?) It has done about 100 hours of work in the last 2 years(clearing heavy aspen forested land) so it runs well. I'd like to know the problem areas. Are parts readily available or difficult to find. The tractor apparently has a retrofitted TD25 turbocharged 817 cubic inch motor.

The Navy Seabees had many TD 24. They were always in the shop. TD 24 had a unique steering arrangement, Unique to the TD 24. two little levers came up from under the seat and pushed completely forward would be high range. pull back one notch and it was low range. Great when it worked but a little weak. The transmittion was 4 speeds but with the unique high and low range on the steering levers it gave the TD24 8 speeds forward and 2 in reverse. also with the levers in low range, pull back on the lever and it was a clutch for that track. Easy to abuse and I believe a little fragile. If the tractor you are looking at is the 817 Turbodiesel that was one of IHC Best construction motors. However, you may have final drive problems as the 817 developed more torque than the original gas/diesel TD24 motor. Certainly the transmittion will take a beating also. However if you are looking at light work, the price is right, you might enjoy it and I know the 817 motor is better than the original.
