'46 H Stuck in Gear

Just bought a 46 H. The guy said it was a working tractor, not a fixer upper. Rusty as all get out but came with 3 pickup loads of parts. 2 rear tires, 1 on a rim, 2 front tires already mounted, a hood, grill, extra gas tank....etc...etc...
The engine runs great! Starts after 2-3 revolutions every time, even cold.
The hydralic lift on the front end loader attachment was very slow to start going up and would not go up all the way, so I checked the transmission fluid and saw none on the dipstick. Up to this point all was well. I went to Family Farm and Garden and the man said I should use the Universal fluid even though it said JOHN DEERE.
I added fluid, and the bucket went up and down great! Ten time faster than before and smoother too. I wanted to cut with the sickle bar, and drove the tractor 3 hundred yards to where I was gonna lower the bar and start cutting. I heard a CLANK-CLAKKING sound several times I did not recognize and wondered if there was a problem with that gear (3rd). Shut the tractor down to lower the sickle bar, (on a slight downhill grade.SLIGHT not steep) got back on and fired it up and now it is stuck in gear, the shift lever will not move other than to rattle a little, can't put it in nuetral and when I let the cluch out the engine takes a strain without moving the tractor at all, and will stop the engine if you let the cluch all the way out.

Did I add the wrong fluid? Overfill? Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing? Tranny shot?

Many thanks for all the great advice.
Went out this morning after reading the helpfull info that came in about the shift lever.
Pulled thepin, removed the lever, aligned the gears, replaced the shift lever, and was in business!
It worked, but the wear was such that it was not perfect, gears in wrong positions, could not get in reverse...but at least I knew what the problem was.
Went and rummaged through the extra parts that came with the tractor, found another used shift lever that was in better shape. Put it on and all is well again!
Works like new, runs great, all the gears are where they should be in the shift pattern, and I am very happy!

I wiil rebuild the old lever and keep it till next time.

The way you get the transmision out of gear is to drive the pin out of the shifting lever and then you take the lever out and line up the shifting forks. To help prevent the problem of sticking in gear you should get the shifting lever built up so it don't jump out of the rails. To build up the lever you need to weld up the bottom and square up the sides.

It sounds like you're stuck in two gears at the same time. This happens when the shifting mechanizm gets worn and the transmission does not shift out of one gear before it shifts into another gear. This has happened on my M. I was able to remove the belt pulley assembly and disengage the gears using a pry bar.

You can also disengage the gears by removing the gear shift lever and working through that opening.

To fix this you need to repair the wear to the shifting mechanizm. On my M all I had to do was build up the wear on the end of the gear shift lever itself where it engages the shifting forks.

My M used to lock in two gears regularly. Once I cured the wear on the end of the shifting lever it has not done it again.

I've heard of this before, and did do it once to an M. I guess some can actually get stuck in two gears at once. Now that you've tried to move it, two different gear sets w/ different ratio's are fighting against each other, causing a pretty good bind you notice in the shifter. Supposedly, if you rock the tractor back and forth by the rear wheel, you can get it back into neutral. Not sure how hard you'll have to rock this one, may need two of you.

IF YOU CHECK ANYTHING ON THIS TRACTOR BY A DIPSTICK IT COULD ONLY BE THE HYDRALICS. THE FILL PLUG FOR THE TRANNY IS ON THE FLAT PLACE ON TOP NEXT TO WHERE THE PEDESTAL BOLTS FOR THE STEERING WHEEL AS FOR THE REST THERES FELLOWS HERE WHO CAN HELP I'LL BET IF YOU GAVE SOME OF THEM 3000 LBS. OF METAL THEY COULD BUILD YOU AN H
