My H seems to "race" up and down while idling. Under load it runs smooth. Is this a governor, carburator, or some other problem. Where should I begin? I checked the gas flow from the tank to the carb and there is a good pencil size flow of gas.

Could be either a carb or governor problem. Quick way to tell: With the motor warm and idling, slowly close the choke. If at some point the motor stops surging and smooths out, you've got a plugged idle circuit in the carb. Time to clean and rebuild the carb.

On the other hand as you pull the choke, if the exhaust begins to smoke black and the surging continues, the carb's probably OK - it's a problem in the governor (either a bad linkage adjustment or a worn bearing someplace.)

Tony is the engine maintaining steady RPM at speeds other than idle?

Yes. It seems to run fine at high rpms. It takes a little while to smooth out at low rpms. It never stops surging at the mid rpm ranges. What are you thinking?

Try Bob's technique first. If you isolate the problem to the governor, more than likely you have both a worn spring and a wobbly thruster bearing. With the engine off, remove the side plate on the governor and check that thruster bearing behind the spring. It should slide horizontally on the shaft but not wiggle. From your above description, I bet that is the culprit. A spring and thruster bearing assembly will run you around $100.

Red, hello. I think I may have a gov issue. My H sputs and runs bad when loaded. It does not seem to surge like the gov is working. All things are new, carb rebuilt by pro. What can I look for on the gov, do they sell rebuilt govsand who might have that. Look forward to you reply.

Johnny try the above comment I made and report back with your findings. We'll figure it out.

i tried Bob's suggestion and it does smooth out when the choke is pulled. I think I will begin with rebuilding the carb and proceed from there.

Thanks for the input.

That sounds like a good first step. Post your results when you got it rebuilt. When you get ready to install the carburetor, first hook it up to the governor shaft and make sure you get the protrusion in the governor shaft into the slot on the butterfly. Work the throttle lever up and down and make sure the butterfly is opening and closing correctly. Then raise and hookup to the manifold. Don't forget the gasket!

Hey Red - Is there any trick to getting that governor shaft fitted correctly to the carb throttle shaft? Seems to require the use of every profanity I know and a minimum of 2 beers to get everything connected properly....

Bob I usually set the throttle lever at idle and the butterfly closed and eyeball it. I did get one jammed once. When I started that poor H it revved up so far that I thought it was heading to the moon!

Exactly the same thing happened to me with my SH. Reved up so quick it blew an improperly tightened line off the back of the oil gage showering the operator (me...) with several quarts of 15W-40 before I got it shut down. Whatta mess...

I don't know about the Massey, but the H has roughly 25 HP on the drawbar and 27 plus on the PTO and the flat belt pulley assembly.

I had this same idle problem on my 47 H and I found a woren throttle shaft and bushing,it was sucking to much air. Replaced them and now it runs like new again.
