Help!! I had a rough running M Yesterday. Today it don't start. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor. It has a magneto system, 6 volt. There was a broken wire from the condenser,( also replaced)to the point breaker arm anchor, so I replaced it also. Replaced the coil wire also. I pulled out the number one plug and held it against the block while I turned it over. No spark. Does this system have to be right on time in order to produce a spark? I do have a service manual with nice pictures of the magneto, and directions to time it but so far I haven't got a clue. What did I screw up? Thanks for any help. Bart in Vt.

If I comprehended the story correctly, the tractor was running rough, you replaced the condenser, points and wire from the coil and now you have no spark, correct? If this is correct here are
A few things to check:

Be sure the wires from the coil and condenser are not touching the case of the mag where they are attached to the points. This sounds like your problem if you ask me.

Be sure the points are not grounded out at the base where they pivot.

Be sure the gear drive mechanism that drives the rotor is in time with the points. This can be installed on the shaft with the flat spot on it 180 degrees out of time.

Hope these suggestions help.

Regularman, Thanks for the pointers. These are the kinds of tips I can use.I'm pretty new at this but I don't quit trying. I'll try what you said and be back later. Thanks again. Bart in Vt.

Bart, You may have a bad coil in the mag itself. If you didn't remove anything behind the housing that holds the points it is probably still in time with the proper retard etc. Might want to check the impulse trip using the guidance from your manual. The coil may have just said, "I Quit"/FB

Check the points to be sure they are opening. I've seen new points that were shorted.

Good luck,
