I have found a Farmall 300 Utility with a front
loader, torque amplifier, etc. Anyone have any
tips or things to look for before purchasing. I could really use the front end loader but I am hearing horror stories about extreme wear on the
clutch when using a loader. Is the 300 just a newer version of the H? Any help appreciated.

We had one of these as a loader tractor and general-abuse machine on the farm for over 20 years without ANY significant repairs! I wouldn't be too concerned about the clutch, so long as the operator has the good sense to fully engage the clutch when using the tractor instead of letting the left foot rest on the pedal constantly! You WILL need fluid in the rear tires and at least one set of wheelweights. The hydraulic system on these is pretty rugged if you keep dirt out of it! The place to be concerned about wear is in the steering. Check ALL the bolts on the steering gear to make certain they are tight, and have NOT been allowed to work loose and stay that way. Power steering is a big plus, otherwise the most wear and tear will accumulate in the arms of the operator! We were never really pleased with this tractor in doing heavy tillage work, as it was too light and rode a little roughly compared to the M. It did have plenty of power for pto jobs, however, and was a very dependable piece of equipment.

Oh Yeah I just recently bought a 300 U with a model 150 Dual loader on it. It was a REAL nightmare. Don't get me wrong it wasn't the tractors fault.
I paid 1700.00 for it on a bid deal and it has cost me a lot more to fix it. Things to look for are..... .Make SURE that the power steering is tight and in working order. Mine when purchased unbeknowst to me was loose from the tractor the bolts actually sheared off. I had to almost completely disassemble the tractor to get it fixed.I would also check and make sure that the hydraulic pump is working good. I had to replace mine. the tractor I bought was used by many and taken care of by none. I have not had it long enought to tell you more.....Good Luck

That is part of buying used tractors. Check the price of a new 35-40hp tractor.

The 300 row drop is derived out of the 'H' heritage, but is a significantly more powerful tractor. The 300 utility was IH's first venture into the market that had been dominated by Ford for many years with the 8N, Jubilee, etc. Years ago I worked for a constr company that had a 350 utility with an industrial loader. Many people drove it, including a whole bunch who didn't know much if anything about proper use so the tractor was abused. But even then we didn't have clutch failure. Any time you have a loader on a tractor you need to provide additional weight to the rear to offset the weight of the loader and it's contents but this tractor may already have that.
The 300 is a good solid tractor so if this one is in good shape and you like it, go for it.

Make sure that it has power steering for loader work.

Hi: Extreme wear on the clutch? Depends on the amount of common sence the operator uses.. Use lowest gear and leave room to fully engage BEFORE the heavest load is encountered..make sence? Sure. Then the stress is not on the clutch at all because it is allready engaged. (no slippage) My experiance with a 300 was that it was too light in the rear and needed weights & fluid. HR

See if it runs check the ta general condition of tractor. This tractor was built from the H frame. with much more hp.

Since 1968 I have put 3 clutches in loader tractors. These are tractors that are heavily used.
