I went to pick up my ATV at the shop today and noticed they had an H to pull a little trailer around with. It had the style of seat with the big coil spring up front and the flip over seat.
The odd part ,that I had never seen before, was an indented, rectangular area where the seat assembly could go down into. It was about 2" deep.

I was in a hurry, so didn't look at serial # or get a pic. This indentation was cast right into the rear end cover.

Any info on this?

Thanks, Gene

The "slot type" frame cover was used on Hs with SN 501 thru 15697, that would be all made in 1939 and about 5,000 made in 1940.

As far as ive heard, all the early hs had the square indentation in the deck cover. I beieve they did this from the first h till the end of 1939.

They had an older style seat that used square tubes that fit down into the slot when compressed. The seats are pretty rare now. I found one in decent shape off a '39 H and bought it for $50. It's already spoken for, and he was real happy to find one.

I"ve got an early 40 model with the slot top. Unique to the 39 and early 40 models.

Too lazy to look up the serial break--39 and maybe some 40 H's and M's had it. Slang term is "Slot top".
