B414 battery meltdown issue

Hi y'all
I've had this 63 B414 diesel for a couple of months and it's been running great, but it's always hard to start. There are no glow plugs and the guy I bought it from showed me his method for starting: waving a diesel-soaked rag in front of the breather while turning it over. So far, so good. I haven't had to cold-start it, thank goodness, since I'm in the deep south and it's never really cold.

The last few times I've tried to crank it there's been a hissing sound at the battery and I've noticed molten lead accumulating around the positive terminal. This morning that happened, and when I hit the starter again I heard a buzzing sound for a moment and then nothing. I'm afraid the electrical system may be fried, but I don't know where to begin checking things out. I do not even know if the battery is the right size - right now I have a 12V battery on there, which is what came with it, but I've heard of folks using batteries in series. I've also read some posts on this forum about the positive/negative ground issue, and I'm wondering if the guy I bought it from had it wired correctly?

Many thanks for any help y'all.

Joe

Does anyone know if you can get new gloplugs for a B275?

Thanks y'all - that looks to be the problem. I'm cleaning these and or replacing them today. Hope the battery isn't shot.

If you replace the cables, make sure you get good heavy ones - bigger is better. The replacements typically sold at auto parts stores and farm stores are way too light for turning over a big engine. You probably want at least 1/0 or 2/0 wire size, which you won't find on display.

An old line auto parts house may be able to get truck cables. Any place that services heavy equipment can ether get them or make them for you. I've also made my own using welding cable and crimp/solder terminals.

Thanks, Keith. Great advice. I'm getting some made as I can't find anything really heavy duty available in stores.

Melted lead will require more than cleaning.

As Red Dave says and or replace the battery cable you may have one that is just plain going bad and no amount of cleaning will fix a bad cable

As Red Dave said take apart the connections at the battery. clean with baking powder and a little water, just enough water to make a paste. Make sure all your connections are clean to include where the ground cable bolts to the frame. Tghten all connections good. If the battery connector terminals are bad replace them. You can get just the ends that clamp to the cable but I don`t like those because they corrode where they clamp to the cable. I always replace the complete cable

Hi Joe, we bought a B414 new in 1962 and it had only 1 large 12V battery. The older B250 had 2x6V in series. Your starting method will work until it gets cool. In warm weather we would only have to use the glow plugs for first start in the morning.
As someone else replied your hissing problem is probably a corroded connection at the battery. The B414 was originally a (+)positive ground tractor but someone may have modified it and installed an alternator. The other problem could be internal to the battery. I had that happen to my car battery where one of the internal connections between the cells went open.

If you have to replace the battery, buy the largest capacity battery that will fit in the battery box.

Good luck
JimB

My B-275 same as 414 has 2 6volt bat in series,12 volt. The glo plugs have a resister under the dash. The starter is the weak point on these tractors, 3 bushings back center and nose, the center bushing will cause a drag that overloads the cables. The tractor is worth fixing, It will run loaded all day on 10gal of fuel.

To me it sounds to me like you have a high resistance connection between the battery terminal and the battery connector. It would get hot just as you describe.

I'd take the connection apart and clean it real good and see if things improve.
