Help...I have a w4 1940's?? with a starter that was dead. Gas motor, with the drum drive on the top of the trans. I had to cut out the starter to remove it. I was told by an ol timer friend that the starter was from the wrong year, as the housing was too wide to remove around the top of the trans/drum/drive.

Is there a different starter with a smaller diameter housing made for the drum/belt drive models??

Just learning and having fun doing it.
Thanks,
Michael

Belt pully likley has to be removed, take gas tank off, remove belt pulley from trans housing, starter comes off easy. Memory fuzzy as it was 15 years a go or so when we did our W-4

If you remove the belt pulley assembly first it is no problem. I have a I-4 with no belt pulley and it is easy to remove the starter.

From what I can tell you, owning an I-4, which is basically the same, the starter is tuff to get out without removing the belt pulley assembly, but it can be done. Last time mine was out, I took all the bolts out that would come out without removing the belt pulley asembly, the using a pry bar, I raised the cover as far as I caopuld get it to move, and the starter slid right out. Also put it back in like that. I have also heard of one guy that took the starter apart ON there tractor, then removed the 2 bolts holding it in.Gives alot more play room. Some just remove the belt pulley assembly to do the job, and other find or make a cover plate for the assembly and never worry about it again. When you say you cut out the starter, how did you do that, did you cut the accual starter out, or cut the cover? IF you cut the cover, mught as well look ofr another one.

W4, belt pulley, starter problems. Not words you want to have to use in the same sentence. I have never had mine off, although at painting time I did try. The only two ways I can see are 1) removal or at least loosening of belt pulley assembly 2) dissasembly of the starter where it sits. Neither are 5 minute jobs. I'm hoping an expert will chip in with some advice here, as I know the day will come when my starter has to come off, too. It does lock periodically, but I have always remedied that without removal.

Thanks for the informative responses!

Well I need to order a new starter and spend the time to loosen the belt pulley assembly.

The tractor will be used for a film coming up in a few weeks so I don't have much time!

A W4 expert would be nice to chime in a few notes on the subject!

After reading my responce I think I left some things out. Take out as many of the bolts for the COVER, not the belt pulley.Loosen the others for the COVER. Pry up on the side that the starter is on as much as possible, but make sure you have a good bite on the cover. This allows the starter to tilt just enough to work it in. Iwill say, I got real lucky one time and it slipped in without doing any prying, but I couldnt get it to do that again to save my life. If I have to do it again, I think I will find a pulley delete plate and then I will never have to worry about it again. What movie?
