Well I'm out of things to check, my 454 gas won't stop smoking. Definately unburnt fuel. Air cleaner ok, adjusted idle on carb to specs, regapped points. Pulled and regapped the plugs. #1 was sooted, rest looked ok. Cleaned the plug still smokes. Pulled valve covers and checked valves are at .027 as manual says..... Someone told me once to tighten the rockers down to where at valves full closed the pushrod is snug...which is right?

Manual says to retime engine after doing points, only problems with that are 1. can't find timing marks on the balance. 2 can't find timing specs in the manual... Any advice? Thanks!

I agree with what someone else said about checking the float. A couple of the biggest problems I have fought were float problems. It it leaks it will be too heavy, and never stop the flow of fuel until you have way too much fuel in the bowl. Basically the same as having it set too high. Had one on a pickup and rebuilt the carb several times, then gave up and took it to someone and when I picked it up he told me if I had replaced the float it would have fixed it. He actually weighs the floats and if they are heavy he replaces. Really that is the only thing to go wrong with a float - leaking. On another I could actually hear the gas in the brass float. I found the leak, and since it was not available any longer I opened it up and dried it out, and soldered the leak. Problem solved. Other possibility is a plugged passage. I have fought those several times as well. Many times I have ran fine wires through them and blew them out fixing the problem. Good luck.

Don"t set your valves snug like that. You will burn them out! Get the engine good and warmed up and set them to the specs. If an engine has solid lift they must a little clearance and click. If an engine has hydraulic lifters snug is ok as the lifter will take up the setting automaticly.

I had the same exact problem with my Hydro 70. Fought that darned thing for a solid year.

Finally just gave up and bought a new carb. End of story. Those things just flat wear out.

The most noticeable smoke seems to be at idle, but almost has to be all the time, the glasspack is pretty loaded up

Idle jet works back wards by the way. turn it out to lean it out and turn it in to make it richer. As far as the main jet if it has an adjustable one it should be low on the carb. Turn it in to lean it out and out to make it richer. But not all carbs have an adjustable main jet and if thats the case about the only way to fix it is replace the main jet its self
