The starter switch on my old model M has quit working. It is the manual type, goes thru a 7/8" hole, and has one connection to the mag. All the replacements appear to have two wire connections. Can the two wire type be used with no problems?

You mean the push button starter switch? All of those have two terminals. The cable from the battery is connected to one terminal, and the cable to the starter is connected to the other terminal. In addition, there is a smaller wire connected to the same terminal as the battery cable. This wire then is connected to one of the terminals on the two wire ignition switch, and the other ignition switch terminal is wired to the battery ignition distributor. If you have a magneto, there is NO connection to the battery.

There are aftermarket switches readily available that fit and function just like the original. Both one wire for the mag and two wire for the battery ignition. The knob is a little different, but for the price you can't get too picky. My email is open.

Bob:
The 2-terminal will work on a magneto, but backwards - pull out to kill the engine. Connect the 2nd terminal to a frame ground. A confusing setup at best.

That old single-wire switch might come back to life if you spray it full of WD-40 and work the switch on & off a few times. All it does is ground the magneto wire when pushed in.

Apparently, you mean the "kill" switch?

The two terminal type for battery igntion CAN be used with a mag, if you connect one of the terminals to chassis ground.

Thenn, the switch will work, but BACKWARDS... pull to "kill", push in to "run".

I seem to recall one of the repro outfits has the correct switch, though,
