400 Cyclo planter settings

I just purchased a 400 planter and need to find the correct sprockets to use for planting soybeans. The chart on the planter does not have my drum size listed. I am looking for around 9 seeds per foot.

I am also wondering why ground speed is stated as critical? Doesn't the planter seed drum drive off of the planter wheel which will rotate relevent to your distance traveled?

I am new to this type of planter and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a 144 hole drum and was not sure how to calculate that drum size from the chart on my hitch cover. I would have thought they could have made that more simple. I am looking for 9-10 seeds per foot so this should get me close. My manual says to run the pto at rated speed, is this really needed to get proper air pressure?

Thanks again!

Mark, do you have a hydraulic fan drive or PTO ? The air pressure can be adjusted by the slide over the fan. It should be adjusted at the speed you will be using in the field which is why they say at rated speed, when air pressure drops the seeds fall out, over pressure will give doubles, not enough = skips. Drop planter when the hitch pin crosses the inside end row or you will have empty space it takes 10-12 feet before the first seed drops.

Mark,

You're going about this backwards. Sounds as though you are trying to set it up for beans by using a corn drum. Don't work.

Ya need to match the drum to the crop being planted, not the sprokets to only one drum.

Allan

Mark, As Gary said there is a varity of drums, I hope you have the chart inside the cover. You may have to use a caculator to convert the chart to the drum you have. Also consider your tire size to the sizes on the chart. It helps to have a good idea how far you want a bag of seed to plant and only put in a measured amount at first, if you fill the hopper right away you may plant a lot before you realize there was an error in your calculation. The air pressure is important, I hope your gauge works, 8 to 10 ounces is best, with beans don't slow your engine rpm's too much while moving it is easier to plug a tube with them than corn because of the higher volume. Before I start I run the pto then walk behind and check each shoe for airflow, and spin the drum by hand to see seed from each row. The rod on the left side of planter that engages the clutch which stops the drum you want to lengthen out so the planter dribbles seed on top of the ground before it stops the drum. That way you can check on each end that all rows have seed. I have ran a 400 since 1972, never used a moniter and have liked it very well. I would recommend a speed of between 4 and 5 mph. Good luck, Chuck

Mark, My manaul shows three different drums; 72 hole 9 seeds/ft=16 on driver and 8 on driven with speed of 2.75 mph; 96 hole 9 seeds/ft=15 on driver and 10 on driven with speed of 3.75 mph; 144 hole 9 seeds/foot= 18 on driver and 17 on driven with speed of5.25 mph.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the settings, but the ground speed is important.

I always planted with our 544 at a speed of around 4.5 mph and had a nice even crop of corn when it came up. Dad used the 1086 and went 5.5 mph and there were extensive skips and lots of double dropped seeds...

My theory is you need to give the brushes a reasonable chance to brush away all but one seed, and going too fast doesn't allow that - and sometimes hitting large bumps at speed can knock the seeds down and you get nothing. Just a theory based on my experience with our 400 6-row.
