Farmall H weak start

I have "43 Farmall H that has been converted to a 12v system. The battery and cables are all new as well as the alternator. When I go to start the motor turns over very slowly for 5 or 6 revolutions and then gains momentum. By the end it is rolling over like I would expect and the engine takes off. Does this sound like the starter going bad? Just wondering what you guys thought and what would be my next step.

Thanks as always, you guys are a wealth of knowledge

Joe

I think you have a loose connection. When it starts to turn, the connection heats up and expands, making a better connection. Feel for heet after using the starter with the switch off. It could be the crimp on the cable itself.

If it was a problem in the battery, no way it would speed up during starting. It would never turn faster than the first turn, and would drop off turning depending on the severity of the sulfation or low charge. I'm betting on the starter motor. Dirty. Once it turns and cleans up brushes and bushings it's happy.

Sounds like a tired starter. However it could also be a failing starter switch, a weak battery or possibly a faulty terminal crimp on one of the new cables (it CAN happen…)

Also if the grounded battery cable is not clamped under a bolt that’s directly into the transmission or clutch housing (ie it’s bolted to the battery box sheetmetal) relocate it.

You might try this: With the ignition switch off, crank the engine for 5 – 10 seconds. Then quickly feel the starter switch and each cable terminal. If any are hot to the touch you’ve found the problem.

If all the above check out, time to pull the starter for a peek inside. Most likely the brushes are worn, commutator is dirty, bearings are dry, etc. A trip to your local starter/alternator shop is then in order.

Yep that sounds like your starter might be going bad. I would take it off and take it to a good auto parts store and have it check. Most will do it for free

I know you said the battery is new, but is the battery fully charged? Could something have drained it? Sounds to me like a weak battery. But I'm not expert. Just a guess.

I have a trickle charger on the battery that keeps it maintained to a full charge. I don't think its the battery but you never know.

Thanks,
Joe
