Engine will not shuff off

I purchased a 140 many years after it was coverted to 12 volt. Last week my voltage regulator went out and ruined my battery so I bought a new battery and refurbished Delco 10SI alternator. Now the tractor runs fine but it will start with the ignition switch in the on (pulled out) position and the engine will not cut off when the ignition swith is pushed in (off). Any suggestions?

My M with No generator or anything did that. Turned out that the wire to the mag had paint on one of the connectors so it wouldn't ground out. Touched the end of the wire to a spot on the frame and it shut off.

The Delco 10SI alternator needs an "idiot light", OR a 10 Ohm 10 Watt resistor, OR a diode in the lead to the #1 "switched excite" terminal to protect the alternator AND to prevent current from "backfeeding" into the ignition circuit, causing the engine to keep running with the switch "OFF".

Did you change something in that area, or perhaps it HAS a diode that became "shorted".

Could be that a surge that cooked your VR also did some damage in the switch, or vise versa. Have you got a multimeter to test the switch out to make sure it's functioning? (If not a multimeter, how about a test light? With the switch disconnected from the tractor, run a jumper from the ground of your battery to one terminal, and a test light from the other terminal back to the hot on your battery.) I'd start there.
