Disc Harrow - Need Advice

New 5' Howse tandum disc harrow came with the rear gang discs set at a less aggresive angle than the front gang discs. Is there a good reason for this? I took the time to reset the rears angle to equal the fronts angle. I had to make some minor adjustments anyway. They seemed to work Okay behind the 140 the way they came. What advice can someone give me who has more disc experience than I?

If you like the way the ground looks you are ok. If the rear are angled too much they can leave a hump in the middle of the pass. A light 5 ft disk isn't going to bury much trash anyway.

CNKS: I've got a 5' fast hitch disk for my tractors 20-18" blades and it will go will go axle deep just about anywhere on plowed ground, and that is with angle about 1/2 as sharp as it will go. If I set the angle as sharp as it will go I cant pull it with 130 or 140. It's good night on traction.

Believe me it cuts and covers trash just as well as a 44 blade Oliver with 18" blades I once pulled with my 560 and as well as and 88 blade Bush Hog with 20" blades I pulled with 1066. In fact looking back I feel a bit cheated on the Oliver and Bush Hog, they cost a lot more per blade than this little 20 blade disk I have.

Hugh -- you have an IH disk. Same quality in the smaller ones as in the larger ones. I have never heard of Howse (see below for update) -- I am assuming that it is one of the light duty farm store disks. I could be wrong (I wasn't). But, if I saw it I could probably tell by looking if it was any good or not. I have not used a fast hitch or three point disk, except for a couple of worthless worn out ones I occasionally rent out of desperation for some job I have -- left the farm nearly 50 years ago. At that time we used a heavily weighted IH 6 foot tandem disk behind an H at full angle. It worked well, but was usually used behind a plow, so there was little trash. For good trash burial and one pass weed control you really need an offset, an H doesn't handle one of those with any width. Update -- The link is the Howse website, slide show of what they sell including a light duty tandem disk. Probably should not compare real IH farm equipment to some of the lighter stuff.

It's called a medium duty, an LTR with 20 18" discs. Weighs about 600 #. I ran over the rows with those winged shaped cultivators early on and came back with this disc. I was impressed but I have little experience.

I tried on fresh ground and could see it would take several passes. Pretty sure I could make some passes with cultivators and come back with the disc.

The front gangs were 3/5ths of full tilt and the rears 2/5ths of full tilt. Now both are 3/5ths.

Thanks for the leveling ground idea. I was trying to pulverize garden soil but can see how reducing the angle on the rear gangs would let you level soil.

Straight in front for more cutting action and rear angled to bury more trash.

Hi , Wouldn't a 5' disk be more for smoothing a garden than covering trash in a field ? We used to have a 6' heavy frame pull type disk at work with two 12" manhole rings on it for weight and in disturbed soil such as backfill it wouldn't cut more than 3" with notched blades and the gangs as straight across as possible . But it did a wonderful job of smoothing the ground before we used a York rake on it to remove the rocks . ...Randy

Yes, our use of a tandem disk was to break up clods and prepare a seedbed, long before anyone had heard of no till. It was also used to kill small weeds after a rain. Note the word small. Tall weeds with a tandem takes several trips.
