Somebody reassure me, that the flimsy front main seal that came with my gasket set, with a spring that is only 1/4 as thick, is an adequate replacement for the very heavy and substantial seal that I just popped out of the timing gear cover for my Super-A.

Pete: I can assure you it does work. I started my Super A for the first time today since my seal replacement and paint job. I let it run for an hour, worked the hydraulics, just to check for any leaks. Happy to report I have none.

I'll have photos for you in a few days. I got to put the wheels back on and get it off blocks. I'm going to convert my battery box to same as 100, 130 and 140, two halves, makes it much easier changing batteries, or if you want the battery out for wire maintainence.

Yes I will reassure you! Seals made today vs seals made of felt and metal 60 years ago.....the old ones are thick, but the new neopryene seals will outlast them by far, they are used on crank ends etc that last hundreds of thousands of miles, any I have used worked and worked well. You don't need to be afraid of a modern seal, as has been pointed out seal technology has come a long way

I am guessing that you are referring to the fact that the new seals are only about 1/2 the thickness of the old one. The new seals are made of much better material than the ones from 40-50 years ago. You will want to check the crankshaft in the area where the old seal rubbed. If it has a wear groove then you will want to postion the new seal either all of the way into the flange or keep it to the outside so that it wears on a good spot on the crankshaft.

Some people talk of putting two seals in the place of the one thick one. The problem with this is that the crankcase oil is what lubricates the seal on the crankshaft. If there are two seals and the inner one is doing its job then the outer seal will not be lubricated and it is going to wear and not do anything but take up space.

Don't tighten the bolts in the front cover until after you you install the damper pulley. This will let it center itself in the new seal. Some lubri-plate on the seal will let it slip over the hub easier. Hal

I like to poke some grease in the seal to keep the spring from popping out during assembly.
