how should the timeing marks look on a 140 enigne. should they be like . . or . . . thanks

I think they should be aligned this way when the keyway on the timing gear is on your left as you face it. Hal
PS: Read the typing on the edge of the sketch.

sorry it was suppose to look like two dots with a single dot in the middle or two sinle dots lined up

You need to align the single punch marks on the
camgear with the single punch marks on the crankshaft gear. Then align the double punch marks on the camgear with with single punch mark
on the governor gear. Hal
