Planning on converting a 1950 recent purchase H to 12V. Right now start and run only. Came with some kind of 12v generator, 12V VR, and a 12V coil. If I go with the 12V alternator conversion do I use the 12V coil w/o ballast resistor and remove the VR? Any problem with this fitting under the hood? Any help appreciated. Steve

Thanks for the replys. The main question I have, being an eletrical dummy, is on the 12V upgrade do I use the ballast resistor with the 12V coil? In the schematics I believe they are keeping the 6V coil in play. Thanks, again. Steve

No short answer.
A ballast resistor is used on all 6v coils when run on 12v.
12v coils that are designed for a ballast resistor (and plenty of them are), are actuall very close to the spec. of a 6v coil, and need the same ballast resistor. there are two types of "true 12v" coils one that just is designed to run on 12v, the other contains a thermistor (internal to it) that allows the coil to operate briefly at higher voltage (12v) but as the resistor warms, the coil is supplied with lower voltage. this allows the coil to be a bit more agressive while cranking the engine, when battery volts across the starter load is reduced to 10 volts or so. Starter relays (ford type)include a forth terminal that is supplied voltage when cranking to bypass the external ballast resistor, giving full 10v (cranking)to the coil. JimN

The Bracketing usually involves inverting the Gen bracket, using a new adjuster link on top. and putting a different Longer bolt through the bottom with spacers as needed. Precise belt length is needed, but it does fit.
The three wire Delco SI-10 series is used, as are smaller Hitachi generators from mid 89s Nissan trucks.
Internal regulators eliminate the need for the original regulator. JimN
