I am re-installing rings on my Farmall M, and I am reusing the old rings. The two middle rings have a bevel on the inside, and I didn't pay attention when I took them off to see it it goes up or down in the ring groove.

If I had a cross-section, it would look like the picture, with the flat side obviously against the cylinder wall, bevel side in the piston. So which way does it go?

Thanks again

Bevel down.
this allows a tiny bit of twist on the way down. causing a scraping action. learned at Perfect Circle training, 1969. JimN

That's what my "gut feeling" was. Not for any reason, just looked right.

Thanks for the help.

(I should have the engine block back from the machinist next week, if anybody is following this little project!)

I just went thru this on a non "M" and Hastings rings. From the Hastings website it said.
Dot or pip mark always goes up.
If no dot or pip. bevel goes up.
If no dot ,pip and not beveled, either side up.
Good luck!
