I have a Farmall C that I cann't get the generator to show that it is charging. I have looked at wiring diagrams that I have found here and seem to have everything wired correctly. I have a new ammeter so it shoulbe working. When I run the tractor the meter shows I am discharging.Ir anyone can give me any ideas what I need to do to get the system to charge it would be appreciated. My generator has bee rebuilt and the regulator is new.

If the lights work try this. With nothing running turn on the lights if the needle goes to charge, the meter is backwards, or the battery is backwards. It is positive F terminal on the generator (leave every thing connected) If it now charges, it is voltage regulator ground, or Regulator internal issue.
If nothing, Polarize the gen as follows. With tractor off, and all wires attached, use a jumper to briefly jump between the Bat terminal and the Gen or Arm terminal on the regulator. It will spark, but not radically. This gives the poles in the field a correct charge of magnetism. Now try it. Keep us informed. John T has a great trouble shooting guide in several posts in the archives. They will do the trick. JimN

the original directions had errors in it (either my computer's touch pad highlighted some parts that were left out, or it was in transmission of data on the net. Sorry. JimN
If the lights on the tractor work they can be used to load the battery to see if the amp meter is connected backwards, or battery is in backwards. Try this. With nothing running, turn on the lights, if the needle goes to charge, the meter is connected backwards, or the battery is backwards. It is positive ground from the factory!! but could be changed.

To test the generator and the cutout portion of the regulator, ground the F terminal on the generator while it is running (leave all wires connected) If it now charges, it is voltage regulator ground, or Regulator internal issue.
If nothing, Polarize the gen as follows. With tractor off, and all wires attached, use a jumper to briefly jump between the Bat terminal and the Gen or Arm (they are often marked either way when produced) terminal on the regulator. It will spark, but not radically. This gives the poles in the field a correct charge of magnetism. Now start the tractor and observe the meter. Keep us informed. John T has a great trouble shooting guide in several posts in the archives. They will do the trick. JimN

to Janicholson!!!,,Maybe I was not clear enough as I had"nt had any coffee when I stsrted that,,well,, here goes,,,""I have had the Cub "106" completedly disammembled and repainted it. Then I put everything back together as was befor. Tried to start it , and "nothing but did turn over. Replaced the key switch, tested the solenoid and it was good,,replaced the coil with new one. Still ii HAVE NO SPARK AT THE PLUG AND WITH COVER OFF THE POINTS ,THERE IS NO SPARK THERE EITHER. jUST WONDERING "WHAT TO DO NEXT., ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! tHX rICK

You should have positive ground. Thats probably why the meter reads discharge. Did you polarize the gen before you started the engine.

The discharge when running?---do you get the same indication when it is not running but the switch is on?

I suspect that you are not getting a good ground between the generator and the frame. Take the generator off and clean the mounting lugs and the mounting flange on the tractor...then put it back on...or. to see if that is the problem, just clean a spot on the generator and jump to the ground just to test it.

Have you tried reversing the wires on the back of the amp meter?

Make sure the generator has a good ground connection. Make sure the battery is good and the cables are clean and in good condition. You may need the polarize the generator if you have not already. Also make sure the contacts inside the headlight switch are clean.
