OOH!

Something comes to mind here with something I did with the wiring.
I somehow wired the darn thing to where I was getting no spark when I put a load on the starter or vice versa.

Have someone check the fire as you turn it over and check to see if the coil stays energized when you let go of the switch.

when you get this thing running you should tell us who gave you the right diagnosis. i get a kick out of these situations , one guy says something and six guys reword it.if you have comp.fuel and spark at the right time you will have an explosion.just like the old saying gene gene built a machine, art art blew a fart and blew the whole dam thing apart!

If you have good fire to the plugs and fuel and there's not even a pop from the engine you have the ignition out of time. When you bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke your rotor should be pointing to the No1 plug tower on the cap and both valves on No1 piston should be closed. If you removed the cam and crankshaft gears your punch marks should mesh as shown in this picture. Hal

you didnt say if you had camshaft out, sounds as if timing marks are not in line. i would remove valve cover and turn engine over slowly and watch what valves are doing when #1 is coming on comp. in.& ex. should be closed.its running mate #4 should be on the rock.that is with timing marks on front pulley lined up then rock pulley back and forth about 2"and #4 valves should be rocking also.this is the way to set valve clearances, just watch when the running mate to the cyl.your adj.is on the rock.

All you can do is try it all again. Get a fresh set of eyes to look at it for you, because you may be skipping over the real problem, thinking "Yeah, I already checked that," when you really didn't, or made a mistake.

Engines don't "not run" for no reason. If the fuel, fire, and air are all hitting at the right time with enough compression, it WILL run. Obviously one of those five factors is missing.

You said you've got air fuel and fire, so the only things left are compression and timing.

It's very easy to be timing against #1 TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of #1 TDC on the compression stroke.

Check the compression of the cylinders too.

Take a wrench, turn motor to Top Dead Center or TDC,take number 1 spark plug out,put a screwdriver in there and turn the motor a little both ways and make sure the piston is all the way up,take distributer cap off,is the bug pointing to number one or just barely past number one?If its pointing to number 4 or just past number 4,and its on the compression stroke on number one, there is your problem. You installed the distributer 180 degrees or halfway out.Easy to do.Best thing is to get somebody to help you a little,2 heads are better than one a lot of times. When its on the compression stroke both valves on that cylinder will be closed.Thats whats wrong usually when I cant get a motor started after having it apart.Lots of other things it could be,but thats the most likely.

If you did all that correctly, then it has to run. I suggest that you start over. Be sure you have #1 (closest to the radiator as mentioned) on the compression stroke, and the timing marks lined up.

You donthave any fire going to the plugs at the rite time. Better take of the cap and see when the pistons are at tdc if the rotor points to the rite wire.

Should also add that #1 is closest to the rad.

Timing. Set #1 to TDC, then turn the flywheel by hand (screwdriver or have someone turn the crank) until the marks line up. Remove the distributer and set the rotor so that it lines up to #1 in the cap. Reinstall and rotate counterclockwise. remove wire from coil, hold 1/4 inch from screw on dist and rotate distributer clockwise until it sparks. Provided you have good points, coil, and condensor, regardless of what you did, if it does not start, you then have a fuel problem.
