One the brake drum is off, the shaft will slide out of the housing. May need a tap with a mallet to drive the bearing out. The shaft comes out the "outside" opposite the brake drum.

At first I was just going to replace the brake
band as the one that was in it desolved into two
peices that resembled two small sheets of paper incased in an oil dirt cake. My goal is a decient
restoration of the entire tractor fixing whats broke and leaking, running it for a while then dissasemble and paint. So my intent is to replace all seals and bearings as i come across them. It's
a father son project he's 10 and were having alot of fun. So whats the drill on freeing up the diff shaft from the final drive? Thanks Ray

Ray,

I just rebuilt both of my finals on our 48 SA. The right-hand side was a bugger to get the brake drum off. I tried all my pullers, heat, you name it. The last resort was to put the final drive housing in my press and push the differential shaft through the drum and out the housing. Once I got past the drum to shaft surface the shaft slid right out of the housing. The shaft passes through the outboard hole of the final drive housing. Have fun, Greg.

What exactly are you trying to do next? The brakes and drum should be exposed to you. The drum is kept on with a set screw. Dave.

Dave pointed out something I forgot to mention, you MUST back off the brake drum set screw before you try to remove it.
