Hi,
I have a 1486 and I started it up yesterday and it was around 18°F. I let it warm up for a good 15-20 min. I noticed that the T/A lever didnt want to go all the way forward, almost like it was sticking. Then when I drove it for awhile it would finilly go all the way forward. Also, It seems like it wanted to free wheel going down hill in both pasitions. From what I understand there is some kind of valve the the T/A controls and I was wondering if it was really cold out...like it was, if the T/A will start acting goofy. I have only owned this tractor for a month, so i dont know how it will act in the hotter weather. When i picked it up from the dealer, it was around 30-40 degrees and it would not freewheel, I sure will sleep alot better if I know it is just the cold that is causing it to do that.

It is usually the cable or linkage. make sure the cable works freely. They do wear out and get stiff.

It is normally reccomended that you warm up your tractor to really test a t/a because the oil is thinner that way. During cold weather the oil is thicker of course which means it should hold the pressures ok. It sounds like the t/a side of the clutch pack is not engaging for some reason or your sprag is failing. When the tractor is warmed up and the t/a is failing that is the point of time that I would worry about the t/a being bad.

That handle ought to move with the tractor setting there shut off. Keys in your pocket.

The handle still ought to move both directions.

M T A said: (quoted from post at 07:56:54 02/07/08) DO not use the ta in the winter, it is beter that way.

Care to explain why?

Everyone else, please forgive me for the mildly hostile tone of this post. Baseless statements like this do far more harm than good. People blindly follow advice like this and end up in trouble, usually with an expensive repair bill to go along with it...

Here's what I mean: In winter, the biggest tractor-based job is usually spreading manure, often in deep snow and/or mud. The TA can mean the difference between churning through a tough spot, or running out of power and having to push the clutch. Anybody that's ever spread manure in the winter has been through this, and knows that pushing the clutch usually results in you getting stuck!

"Don't use the TA in winter." What a load of horse manure! A maintained TA in good condition works just as well in winter as summer, and doesn't incur any more wear and tear in winter than summer. Especially the mechanical ones.

Sure the TA will last longer if you don't use it at all, but then why have a TA?

If there has been a period of non use, there may be excessive moisture in the Hytran. This (and possible stirring of small flakes of junk) can cause the MCA valve to stick, or fail to operate correctly. The best thing for TA operation is use. I would never stop using a TA (either mechanical, or hydraulic) seasonally. I think it is an invitation to failure. Move the lever swiftly through its travel and do it. JimN

Is there any good way to clean the MCA valve out, I do know that I need to replace the brakes, so maybe something from the brakes got in there. Does the MCA valve stop it from free wheeling. When it gets a little warmer out, and i recieve my manual, im going to check all the linkages.

I do not iknow directly if that is true. I respect other opinions on that. I do not have the service manual (or that tractor) JimN

We blow snow with our 1086 all winter, regardless of the cold, here in Michigan the TA always seem to work fine. Tom
