When I hit a bump or cross a furrow the engine speeds up quite a bit, before I tear it down does anyone know what I should be looking for?

i had a h that did the very same thing i fooled with the governor and everything else ya could think of untill i looked down tward the front wheels and saw that the bolts that held the front end where all gone cept one on each side that inturn caused the front kick backwards which caused the steering shaft to snatch foward against the steering wheel support to move the throttle plate

I can say a guy down the road broke off the front end of his M crossing furrows and that happened back in the early 50s when it was new. That made for a mess! Not a good practice if it can be avoided. I watch the bumps in the road too.

Probably the simplest thing to do is to open up the cover on the governor on the left front side and check for slop in the governor linkage. That may be the problem.
