Have the head off the Cub so I want to adjust the valves. Serice Manual says to put #1 piston (one at front of radiator) at TDC. Then adjust the valves in order of 1,2,3,5. When I look at this some of the valves are adjusted in the open position and some are closed. Is this correct? The valves under #1 piston (the 1 and # 2 valve) are both closed. 3rd valve is open as is #5 valve. Is this correct way to adjust them. Then it says to bring the #4 piston (one closes to driver) to top and adjust the 4,6,7, and 8 valves. Are the valve #s counted from the front of the motor to the rear? Any help appreciate. Also some say 13 ths. and some 15 ths. Which one?

I agree with what Bob is saying (below). It sounds as though you are at tdc of the EXHAUST stroke, not true TDC (compression stroke), where both the intake and exhaust valve of #1 cylinder are closed. Like Bob says, try turning the engine one more time around until #1 is at tdc again. That should get you to the "correct" TDC to adjust valves #1, 2, 3 & 5.

If thats a little confusing- each cylinder seperate, turn until one valve is up/open then adjust the Closed one. Repeat until all adjusted.

If I am understanding you correctly, you need to turn the engine ONE turn in the direction it runs (CW, viewed from the front) from where it is now to conform with the adjustment sequence you are trying to follow, as you seem to be starting off one turn from where you need to be.

Then, it will be in the position to adjust valves mentioned first... 1,2,3,5.

After adjusting THOSE 4 valves, turn it exactly ONE more turn in the direction it runs, then set the remaining valves, 4,6,7, and 8.

(ANY valve being adjusted MUST be closed!)

There is an official IH document showing the procedure on the Rudi's Cubs website, at this link:

Yes, count them from front to back. That is the correct procedure. Use .015.(cold)

Valves can only be adjusted when closed.
