I have just recently become an owner of a '42 farmall H. (my first) I am searching for a schematic or even a rough drawing of the hydraulic Lift-all system so I can better utualize this wonderful machine. I have serched and It seems like a big secret on how it engages and how to plumb it out. Any help would be greatly excepted!! I'm looking to restore it but countinue to use it just as it was created for!

The vent cap should be left on. A double acting cylinder will displace the amount of oil equal to the area of the cross section of the rod times the distance travelled. This and the fact that temperature changes the volume of the oil means that you need a vent to keep the oil at atmospheric pressure.

To reduce oil foaming the return oil needs to be returned below the level of the oil in the reservoir. If the flow is not too great it may be acceptable to allow the oil to return running down the inside wall of the reservoir. The Lift-All pump has about a 4 to 6 inch drop for the oil if returned to the fill pipe and will cause foaming.

6 quarts of #30 non-detergent oil was original specification. All 3 outlets are pressure out , gravity return. (1 way hydraulics)
Try the link below and search for H Farmall parts. Its all there.

This diagram will do the two way operation. Position the valve or valves securely where they are easy to reach. The level indicator is a dip stick in the top under the baker's hat cap. A plug goes into the side (down pointing) threads in the "T" at the bottom of the resivoir. This is not a live hydraulic system, the clutch must be out for it to operate. The lever (rod) controlling the Liftall must be pulled out and heald to keep the pump running. A fuel line hose clamp will work. The valves must be open center type, as shown. The ports on the left side connect to the same pressure. In this case they are plugged. The rear port can be made to delay lift and drop for trailing emplements if equipped with a restrictor delay valve. This is only used for single acting trailing or mounted equipment. I hope this helps. JimN

This is the diagram discussed above. It has a better bottom fed return. JimN

You have to plumb the pressure out to the bottom of the belly pump use a tee fitting in the drain hole if you go into the top vent pipe it will foam and blow out even with a 3 foot extention.

Here is a schematic for the liftall if you want power up and power down. You can email me at srukke@comcast.net if you want a scan of the owners manual and how it works. There are different ports on the system and one is a delayed port. I highly recommend that you plumb the return line into the bottom of the tank rather than the filler tube. The oil may foam up if plumbed to the filler. I put a tee where my drain plug was and plumbed the return in onmazingly the system uses 30w motor oil. You can use hydraulic oil but it is designed to use motor oil.

Scott, quick question I just put a 3pt on my M with pressure up and pressure down which I run with my belly pump. Everything works great except I had a lot of oil discharge out of the vent on my cap, I was told that I should plug the vent (get a different cap without a vent) because when you use it with two way your oil level doesn't change. Haven't tried it yet but was wanderin what your take was on it?

Thanks,
eric

I installed a back blade with power up and down and have had no problem. Myself, I wouldn't block the vent. I'm no expert but I do know that the oil expands alot when hot and I wouldn't think blocking the vent would be the way to go. I would make sure you're using non-detergent oil and maybe lower the level a bit.

That's what I figured, and I'm going to replumb it into the bottom.

Thanks Scott,

Eric

You really need to get an operators manual and a shop manual for repairs. The hydraulics on an H are single acting, but there is a way to make it double acting, do a search in this forum and you may be able to find some info. My first tractor was a Super H, great tractor.

Hi, Sorry I cannot help you with a hydraulic shematic, but I wanted to say Congratulations on your new H! If you could, you should post a photo of it. I recently finished restoration of my 1943 Farmall H. I love my H and it is a great tractor. If you ever have any questions, post here on YT and you will almost always get answers.

Good luck with your H.

Andy.
