Hello: I've got a complete Char Lynn power steering unit and I want to put it on an H Farmall but I don't know if it will fit? The part that the torque generator mounts to has the number 121 stamped in it, does this mean anything? Thanks for any help! Mark R.

For an H you need the angled shim - costs around $70 from the company yet, I believe (you can get them through steelwheelranch dot com).

I took the measurements and pictures to my machine shop and they made one for $10. Measures 3.135 round,0.722 at the thickest and 0.085 at the thinnest parts, depth cut in for the shoulder is 0.160

Others have taken theirs to machine shops and told it would be very expensive to make - so it depends on what shop you talk to.

Here's how it lines up using the factory holes in that shim:

I drilled the holes differently on mine, so that the hoses would point where I wanted them to go.

I have the Char-Lynn instructions up at Link

I have pdf format copies of the original CharLyn
installation manuals. One is for the M up to serial number 63359,. The other for everything up to SMTA. The SMTA manual shows the part number 121 as the mounting panel for the generator and gages. If you want copies of these manuals email me privately and I will forward via reply. Allen, the manuals show a solid coupler, with directions on how to best get perfect alignment. Lots of warnings on what poor alignment will do including, constant steering effort, wandering, and burning up the generator. Includes precise directions in drilling the front shaft. Now what someone can do for me is to find one of thos special brackets (p/n 121) so I can mount my unit on the SMTA.

See my response to the fellow below. You can buy the brakets all day long for $79. What a rip!

Where did you find those instructions for instalation? Can I play too? :>)

I looked at the Ebay bracket. I can't see how it works. It looks like two pieces. The large one does't have place for mounting the generator. You have the right one for M after ser number 63359.If your M is prior to that you simply drill the existing bracket. I actually got them from a member on this board about 2 years ago.You can play if you send me an email.

I sent you the email.

If ya send me those instructions, I might even quit using the plow. Heck, I'll probably go no-til even. :>(

Wait a minute! If I do that, then I don't need this tractor anymore.

Looks like I'm trapped in my own stupidity.! Sent the email anyway. :>)

Don't mean to hijack this thread but... Am wanting to put PS on a 40 M which has the pressed steel steering shaft/gauge support as shown on Allan's H. Does anyone know if the wedge plate that Steven f/AZ shows in a previous post for an H will work for an M?

I totally don't know at this point; haven't been there yet.

However, I was "told" that on a M, instead of the wedge, ya buy the different plate and that the wedge isn't used.

While working on my H, I had bought my stuff out of a salvage yard knowing that it had come off a M.

Nothing out of that order worked on the H except that darned torque motor, which came bolted directly to the aftermarket plate.

The part that really threw me was that the worm gear was totally different also. Shafts are the same size, but the gear is larger on a M. So, I had to cut down the original H shaft to make the torque motor work.

Had bought all that stuff and nothing interchanged. Had to still buy the H wedge, a live pump and priority valve because the M stuff just wouldn't fit.

Dunno,

Allan

Allen, Both my SM and SMTA have the plate like you posted a picture of in the "Heres what I have" post below.

Neither of them has a wedge on the torque motor as pictured on your H, they both do have the wobble type coupler.

I don't know if a wobble coupler is even needed when that plate is used. Everyone recommended to use it when I did the SMTA, so I did.

Maybe the info from GordoSD will be a big help in working things out.

On an H, ya use the original gauge plate, but it takes that wedge that Steve from AZ has in his picture below.

3 new bolt mounting holes have to be drilled into the plate and get ready because it sits in there at a odd/funny angle.

Endgame is to point the torque motor at the hole in the radiator, which is about 5 degrees off plumb, heading it down and to the right as I recall.
