H countershaft Install Question

I know this will be hard to explain but here goes it.

Starting to put back everything on the rear end. The counter shaft has a bearing on both ends, I have the new bearings and the countershaft installed, but it seems I can move the whole assembly with the bearings side to side if I tap on it with a rubber mallet. Is this normal? I know the front retainer keeps it from moving forward, does the pto shaft keep it tight the other way? I can't figure out what is wrong if anything.

Judging by the responses Iassume you meant the play is front to back?? Not side to side.

I hope that picture is when you took it apart. One thing I noticed is the color of the shaft where the rear bearing goes like the bearing locked up and spun on the shaft. Is that black or bluish in color? Make sure there is no grove worn in the shaft or it may make noise if the shaft is sloppy even with new bearings on it.

Ah thanks a ton!! I was worried that I messed up somewhere.

Now I can keep going, and make some forward progress, and see light at the end of the tunnel

The belly pump driver captures the front bearing preventing the shaft from moving back. Notice the snap ring on the OD of the front bearing - this is the one that handles all the thrust. If properly tightened, the nut keeps everything in place. The back bearing 'floats' in the bore of the case. Really, it is a good way to keep from having to shim the shaft.
