During the holidays an opportunity arose for me to take a trip to visit Hugh MacKay. He very kindly agreed to show me his collection of offset Farmalls so on Monday I spent some time with him discussing hitches and all manner of useful additions he has made to his tractors. He also very kindly took me to see some of his neighbours collections. I now have a whole host of new ideas (new to me anyway) for things I can do to improve the functionality of my Super A. It appears that with a little creativity and some engineering skill there is very little that could not be accomplished with these little tractors. I greatly appreciate his sharing his knowledge with me and would like to express my thanks to both him and his wife for extending their hospitality to me. tractorsam

Sam: Let me assure you, no one enjoyed that visit anymore than I. It's not often we have young folks come looking at old iron with as much enthusiem as yourself. I only wish we could have had more time, there are a lot of antique tractor collectors in this area and some very fine restorations amoung them. We only scratched the surface on Mon. You'll have to come back, preferably in warm weather, when these guys get plowing with their old iron. I noticed Willis was all set to enter you in the IPM.

I was back over to see Willis and Jack yesterday. Yesterday must have been visitors day, there was a crowd on hand. Give you bit of a secret, Willis has the warmest shop in these parts, when it gets too cold in other shops Willis gets the crowd. All Willis and Jack managed to get done yesterday afternoon was put a valve cover and side plate gasket on the Farmall M currently under restoration. After that he decided to give up, join the crowd, of cource they also serve coffee and cookies mid afternoon.

To the many YTers, Sam didn't only look at our tractors, he took my 130 for a drive. Then when we were visiting Willis, I was sure he was going to fire up the 856, and roar out of that drive shed. That's got to be one of the finest 856s left anywhere. We looked at some very fine restorations both at Willis's and at Jack's place.

To all our friends from the British Isles here at YT, I think we have a convert. Here was this young Welshman (Sam) embracing our North American built tractors.

I also would have liked to spend some more time, however it was all the time I had. If I'm welcome though I'll have to try to wander back up that way before too long. If Willis is willing to let me loose on one of his tractors with a plough I'd be more than game to give the ploughing match a go. My ploughing my be painful to look at but if he could also lend me a couple of hundred acres to get some practice in on first then I might stand a chance. That 856 was quite the tractor. My problem is I have found very few tractors that I don't really like and I can only afford for so many to follow me home. tractorsam

Jimmy: If your an old iron guy, by all means, your welcome. One bit of warning, you'll not get much info out of me about pre 1939 IH tractors. I grew up way out on the east coast of Canada, we didn't see a lot of tractors until the letter series came along. Tractors were there as early as 1920, just not in big numbers. My families' first tractor was a used Fordson in 1938. Dad tolerated it until 1942 and traded it for a new W4. I say tolerated as my understanding was the horses would have actually had less work, if they had actually done the work, instead of tow starting the Fordson.

Dad used to tell a story about the first day they got the Fordson. They were breaking new land, and my grandfather operated the Fordson on field cultivator until noon. Dad picked rocks with horses and a 2 wheeled cart. At noon, grand dad suggested dad take the Fordson and that he would pick rocks. I guess we can assume the Fordson was that bad.

Hugh, My dad said he liked farming with horses or with tractors, but for him the combination was difficult. He was alone then, would due the heavier work with a 1926 Wallis. But then the horses would stand in the barn or pasture, when it was their turn to go to work by the time they were done raising hec they were tired. Have a good day, Chuck

That is interesting about the Fordson Hugh. Seems my Great Grandpa and my Grandpa had similar problems with a Fordson they bought brand new. Good thing Great Grandpa kept his Belgians around till they got the 10-20, which wasn"t long after they got the Fordson. I heard Grandpa say they spent more hours working on it than running it.

Tractorsam: You are fortunate. You have truly "been to the mountain top" if you visited Hugh MacKay. I wish I could meet him also. I am hoping he will come to RPRU in Missouri this year. He has been a great help to me over the last three years. Until I starting communicating with Hugh on this forum, I was pouring gasoline in the radiator, oil in the gas tank and water in the crankcase. (Not really. But what an imagination I have, eh? HAW-HAW!) Seriously, there are several very knowledgeable, long-term, loyal, helpful folks on this forum who have served here for years of their own freewill, answering the same "freshman" questions over and over, as well as some very in-depth technical tractor questions. For them all I am grateful, and Hugh MacKay is certainly one of them. mike durhan

I am planning to make this trip. If anyone knows when and where so I can plan ahead, I will appreciate it.

tractorsam,
Yes, you have been fortunate to meet a man of his knowledge and genuine interest in this hobby. He is one of the men that post on here that if I see his name on a post, I will look, because about 50% of he time I learn something. Jim
