We had a 300U new in 1956/57 and it did the same thing from day one. The starter is locking in the ring gear on the flywheel. Just be sure to carry the proper wrench with you, loosen the bolts a few turns, rock the starter and it will pop loose, good to go again.

That is a common problem on these older tractors. The teeth on the ring gear of the flywheel have become worn and have rough areas. The teeth on the starter drive then become caught in those rough teeth, and everything just sort of locks up. You can continue with what you are doing to make it work, but the only real cure is to split the tractor and replace the ring gear on the flywheel.

That is the way they are probaly the most commen problem with 4 cylinder IH tractors. Ring gear on flywheel is probaly worn. There is new type "bendix" that is supposed to cure problem but I have never tried one and do not know how much they help.

I own a 300 utility. The starter has little covered holes on it. I put about 10 drops of three in one oil in it twice a year and never have any trouble with starters or solonoids.
