I just picked up a IH 2400 loader/backhoe. I understand it is the same as a IH 454. The boom doesn't swing and it appears that the hydraulics are weak. I notice a large canister under the right foot area that looks to be a return line filter. I'm having a hard time finding any info about this machine. Anyone here have a 2400 or a 454 that can shed some light on what I have?

Daniel, looked at CaseIH parts web site and you are correct it has an aux Side Mounted Hydraulic pump at either 18 or 13.5 GPM to power the loader and the hoe. It also uses a different part number filter than the regular hydraulic on the left side of the transmission case. There is a 2500 (AG 574)Series A model back hoe that would be very similar to the 2400 Series A that you have. The major difference would be the 4 cyl D239 engine instead of the 3 cyl D179. I prefer the D179 as it starts better in the cold than the D239. My brother has over 15,000 Hrs on the D179 in his 454 and still starting and running strong. Hint add some Diesel fuel conditioner or a couple table spoons of engine oil every time you fill the Diesel tank on your 2400. The Bosch Diesel injection pump on these older models rely on the Diesel fuel to lube the injection pump and with the new low sulphur fuels the lubrication is diminished.

Good luck

Hi Daniel, I have no experience with 2400 but lots of experience with AG 454 and its larger brothers 684 and 3230. Is it gas or 3 cyl D179 Diesel? Are you sure loader and hoe run off the same hydraulic pump as power steering, brakes and 3pt hitch? Is there another hydraulic pump for loader and hoe? You are correct the canister under your left foot is for the filter for hydraulic/transmission fluid. It is mounted on MCV valve and hydraulic pump is behind MCV valve inside the transmission case and is powered from PTO shaft. If this is the one that powers the loader and hoe and you have to purchase a new one, check and see if the the upgraded 17 GPM hydraulic pump will fit in the 2400. My brother transferred his loader from a 495 (same as 454) to 3230 and 3230 has 17 GPM pump and has improved the loader lifting speeds considerably.

Jim, I'll take a closer look next week. It looks like the hyd lines for the loader and hoe all come from a pump hanging off the right side of the machine just under the drivers right foot. Just ahead of it is a canister connected to what appears to be the return lines. I'm assuming thats a filter. Dealer here says it has two hyd filters which leads me to think it has another pump somewhere. I'm hoping the problem is just clogged filters. I plan on starting fresh with all the fluids/filters anyway. It does have the three cylinder diesel. Is this a D179? She fires right up when cold and runs smooth. The guages have weathered such that I can't read 'em. I'll be replacing those. My big concern is the hydraulics at this point. I need a set of good service manuals to keep it in good shape. Are they available here?

I see the 2400 is in the Case IH parts database. Did you try to look it up in there?

The search there shows a 2400 corn head. No IH2400 tractor.

The 2400 tractor is there. When you type "2400" in the parts search, you have to look down the list to find the tractors. There's both a Europe and US version of the 2400, so make sure you are looking at the right one for your machine.
