Thinking of buying a 966/1066 next year. How can you find out if the T/A is not slipping ? Just driving it down the road is not putting much of a load on it I think.
Any help on what to check with this model is welcome. New to IH tractors.
Thanks

Thanks for the help.
Going to look for tractor in PA next year.
To the guy who thinks I should have my head checked out: The name of this site is Yesterdays tractors. People buy them for work and play and to remember farm history.
Merry Christmas from The Netherlands.

I would check to see how many hours are on the engine, how many hours on a major overhaul, is a coolant filter being used, has it been changed frequently. I had to rebuild my dad"s 1066 last winter, only had about 5500 hours in it, but the sleeves had developed cavitation pits and water was getting in the oil. It has a coolant filter, but dad probably never changed it.

Thinking of buying a 30 year old, 100+ hp, 2 wheel drive tractor, first thing you should check is your head.

The easiest way I found to check out a 1066 was to let Allan do it.(:~})

Give him a shout he may do it for you.

That old sis sure turned out nice, didn't it? Boy, did I ever like that tractor!

This is what it looked like just about a year ago? Waiting on it's ride to Iowa to show up one night. :>)

Not TA related, but we had lots of trouble with the front end. The bushings in the power steering and tie rods, etc. This all got loose and sloppy way before it should have been worn.

Also the cab left a lot to be desired, at least on the earlier models. Doors rattled, poor fitting , etc.

A good way to check the TA is to load the engine with the brakes, really make it work and pull the TA. If it slips you will notice it. A word of caution if the tractor stops stomp the clutch in as somtimes the tractor will almost stop then jerk back in drive, gets hard on the neck.

Put it in road gear, and stomp on the brakes. That'll test both the brakes and the TA.
What to check? EVERYTHING. You don't buy a tractor like that without giving it a complete going-over with a fine tooth comb. Note any major leaks, weird noises, sloppy fits, or other odd behaviors and take them into account when making your purchase offer.

The way I check TA, is to put it in high frist with ta ahead with throttle opened up and apply the brakes pretty hard, then pull the ta lever back and see if it holds on the low side.I would do this several times both ways on the ta lever.

Be sure to check all the lights. I have a friend who bought a 1066 and the wiring insulation was badly deteriorated from age / sun / weather / mechanical damage / whatever. There were LOTS of places where bare copper could short to ground whenever the tractor moved. I ended up completely replacing all the wires in his lighting circuits.
