Hey guys. Working on that '53 SH that I bought. Just got done putting new plugs, wires, po9ints, condensor, rotor, distributor cap and carb. rebuild kit on it. Went to fire it up yesterday and drive it around a little and couldn't get it to start. Cranked it for maybe 10 seconds just fine but it didn't fire. Let off and then tried again but this time I didn't get anything. The starter wouldn't even turn over; tried throughout the rest of the day but still the same. Battery and cables are new but I haven't checked the starter or solenoid yet. Anybody know how I go about doing that? Also, it has been converted to twelve volt with an alternator so it sould have a twelve starter and solenoid right? Thank you!!!

Mine did that one day and I was tearing things apart like crazy, what i found was everything got jambed up. Try to pull on the fan belt and see if the motor will turn over or if it jambed up? If it wont move then put in the 5th gear and rock it back and forth and see it comes loose. It did the trick for me.

Did the engine run before installing new wires and points? You need to make sure you have battery voltage at the coil on both terminals with the points open and ignition switch on. Your plug wires should be in this firing order on your new cap.
2-1
4-3
Take a piece of 320 wet or dry and rub those new points and then clean them with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Hal

the starter is probably locked up just loosen the mounting bolts and wiggle it the bendix should release.

Matt, if the starter is mechanically stuck/jammed so it cant turn, when you do try n start it the lights would dim down badly (if the switch/solenpoid n cables n connectiosn are alllll lll good) and/or the battery voltage drop way down plus there ought be some cable heating and/or maybe some crackling somewhere?? A stuck starter ought to cause a high amp draw from the battery and that n heat can cause a connection to go bad somewhere from arcing n carbon SO CHECK THE CABLES N CONNECTIONS CUZ IT MAY HAVE STUCK AND THAT CAUSED A POOR CABLE OR CONNECTION!!!!!

As posted below loosening the starter and/or rocking the engine can free it up

IF ITS NOT STUCK SEE BELOW

Is the battery still charged up????? ?? If in doubt give her a good charge n try again, that may be the problem

First thing I suspect (if its not the above) is a poor battery or starter or switch/solenoid connection somewhere. Id remove n clean n wire brush each n every battery n starter n switch/solenoid n starter post n ground conenction TRY THAT NEXT

Okay ifffff the battery is charged and ifffff ffff alllll cables n grounds n connections are all okay and she still dont crank and shes NOT stuck/jammed when you try n crank her,,,, if the lights dim badly or battery voltage drops badly I SUSPECT A BAD STARTER (bushings or armature etc) but if they dont dim a bit n voltage stays about the same, its EITHER a bad switch/solenoid or the starter may still be bad like the brushes.

You can see if its a switch/solenoid problem by jumping around it if you use big heavy jumpers n momentarily attach the BAT input side over to the starter output side or jump from the bat input side (or the ungrounded battery post) direct to the starter post PROVIDED ITS A SWTICH OR A SOLENOID WHERE THATS POSSILBE, cuz if its a mechanical saddle type push switch you cant do that.

let us know what happens

Almost all starters are left at ^V and survive just fine. My Guess is as Glennster's That your starter drive is jambed. Do as He indicates. If it fixes it, it is best to get a new Starter drive (clutch type) from CaseIH. The part is a replacement for that problem and seems to cure it. It does look different. Good luck, and post back the outcomes. JimN

if the starter just stopped and wont turn, could be the bendix is stuck. loosen the starter bolts and wiggle that starter a tad, or, with the ignition off, rock the tractor in gear to get the motor to turn a little, or, turn the motor over a little by using the fan, then see if it turns over. if not recheck and clean all connections. when you get er to crank over- check for spark at the plugs. if you have spark, give er a quick wiff of ether in the carb and see if she pops.
