Howdy Boys: The Super M has been really running rough lately. I rebuilt the carb and I replaced the plug wires. Then, I decided to give it a tune-up. Problem: Each time I set the points at .020 on one lobe, they measure different on the other three lobes. The shaft wiggles. Can this be fixed? Or, do I need to find another SM distributor that is not worn out?
Additionally, I read the article in Red Power magazine about different springs in different distributors, so I guess I would need to find a "J" code (Super M) distributor? Be my luck, I'll look at 200 distributors before I find one of those!!!!
Thanks in advance for your help. mike durhan

I'll add to Hugh and Rusty's comments that it is very straight forward repair. The new bushing should be made to extend farther so that it catches a new spot on the shaft. The shaft is likely worn. It is also possible to have the shaft built up and re ground to size. Make sure to put new IH springs in it when finished to assure proper advance. JimN

Finding a used distributor that doesn't have at least some wear will be next to impossible. Your best bet is to do as Hugh says and take it to a shop. Do it right the first time and that ol' gal will be good for another 50 years.

Mike: I had this problem about 12 yers ago with my 130. The CaseIH dealer fixed it for me, however I believe he farmed part or all of it out to a machine shop. I should have asked more particulars at the time. I can tell you it was around $28. and it's been working fine ever since.
