In an earlier post I stated that I thought I screwed up the timing on my M. I tried the various tests and everything seems to be fine with the timing. I would like to thank everyone for the great advise. I now suspect a fueling problem. Gas seems to run out of the bottom of the carb after cranking over the engine for a short time, but the spark plugs appear to be absolutly dry and don't even smell like gas. Is there anything with the carb or governor that would prevent fuel/air from entering the cylinders? Anyone have any tests they would recommend? Thanks, a very frustrated Matt.

Id say you're right.Timing in or out doesnt have a thing to do with getting fuel to those cylinders. If its been cranking and those plugs arent wet yet, thats your trouble

just like everyone else said it could be the timing also have you pulled the fuel line off then open your fuel valve to see how much fuel is really coming out from the tank and also check your filter inside the carb because you may be getting some fuel but not enough.

I wasn't aware of a filter in the carb. Is it behind the fuel line connection?

Yes it is wher the fuel line connects to the carb ,you should have two sets, the one that is actually fitted into the carb and the other is the the fuel line connection,Remove the fuel line then remove the other, it is more like a screen but you will see if it is dirty or clogged . Hope this helps.

Did you pull the distributor from the engine? Hal

Yes, the pin holding the gear seemed good. I marked the gear and the body when I pulled it out
so I would be able to replace it in the same position. Matt

You should go by where the rotor is pointing, then don't move the engine. Hal

Pull it like JT says. You might have to put it in 5th gear to keep the rear wheels from sliding. If the engine backfires through the air cleaner the ignition timing is off.

If it is in freezing temps, check the oil-bath air cleaner for ice in the cup.

If the fuel comes out of the carb after a bit of cranking, but does not continue to drip with the fuel valve on the tank open, The issue may be one of three items.
1} the timing is not right (plug wires on the wrong distributor terminals. (180 out)
2) intake manifold /carb air leak allowing massive air to get in ahead of the carb.
3) no vacuum pulling fuel into the cylinders.

TO fix #1 Be sure both valves are closed and it is on the timing mark, before setting the plug wire location.

To fix #2 Spray some propane from an unlit torch at all the surfaces of the manifold/carb head at manifold area while cranking to see if it takes off.

To fix #3 put your hand over the intake as El Toro indicates to see if there is a vacuum. Also pulls in fuel. If none, there may be a valve timing issue, or stuck valves. JimN

Get a misting bottle and put some fresh gas in it, mist a few suirts into the carb as you turn the engine over with the starter, if your ignition is correct it should fire and then you will go from there..carb settings or float stuck or needle valve clogged or no fuel flow through the carb.

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if there's good suction there. I would do a compression check to what your readings are.
Compression and manifold vacuum are all related to get that atomized fuel into the engine. Hal

Not really unless you had carb off and the throtle shaft is not in the governor corrctly and preventing the throttle from opening, a loose manifold can cause it not to get fuel to plugs or a blown manifold gasket. These are a couple common things on the IHs I have been around. You might try pulling it in 3 or 4th gear and see what that will do. It will spin engine a lot faster than the starter will. It is worth a try.
