So what is the small tank for on my M? I thought my dad said it was a reserve gas tank, did any of them come out with a reserve tank? Dont ever remember ever having anything in it. He said it leaked. We didn't buy this one new, but I am 53 and we have had it as long as I can remember.

The small tank on your tractor holds gasoline for starting and warming up the engine with before you switch it over to diesel.

OOOOPS!!! I thought you mentioned your tractor being an MD - sorry.

If it's a regular M, the small tank is still for gas used to warm up the engine before switching over to distillate.

The posts on the H is what got my curiousity up on the small tank on the M. So this was an option on the M also? I had always heard folks talking about this, but always in regards to the H's or F series.

Yes, there were distillate burning Ms too. My brother has a 1943 M that was made to burn distillate, has the lower compression head, small gas tank, and had the special manifold.
