Hello,
Yesterday went out to start my '41 H and she wouldn't fire.Had been hoping to use it to run an auger. Pulled a plug and no spark again. I already put a new coil in the mag. Didn't have time to fool with the points but I suspect they need to be replaced. Just gets old not having it start reliably, which is particularly common in damp weather. Any thoughts. It does already have a new dist cap and wires.
Thanks YC

definetly keep your mag like everyone else has said clean and check your points copper wires are the best to use and have you checked your timing

Copper plug wires should be available at your local tractor dealer, TSC, Farm and Country, Runnings, etc. all should have a universal 4-cylinder set.

New points will do wonders for many hard starting/poor running tractors!

Hello and thanks for the help. I know last summer I cleaned the points and that helped. I believe they are old though and should probably replace them.. I will check the wires as well. I know they are new but can't remember if they are copper wire. Where would you get copper wire type plug wires? Sounds as if the mag is the better of the two systems. Thanks again for the help. YC

My magneto tractor is far more reliable than any of our distributor tractors.

You need the points to be in good condition and set to 0.013" along with a good cap and rotor and copper plug wires.

If you live where the weather is damp you will always have ignition problems. My advice is to move. No, seriously, keep everything as clean and dry as you can. You could change to a battery ignition system but if it gets damp you will have the same struggles.

I took the battery ignition off my M and put a mag on it. it is IMHO, 10 times more reliable than a coil and distributor. As Hal said, take sandpaper and clean points.

Clean those points with a piece of 320 wet or dry until shiny. Then see if tractor will start. If you still have no fire you may want to check the magnets for magnetism. They may be weak on magnetism. Touch them with a flat blade screwdriver and see if they attract that screwdriver with a lot of effort. The magnets are what creates your fire when they pass by the coil. Hal

A mag once set up right will work as good or better then a distubutor type of system. But some times it takes some playing with them to get all right with them. When you replaced the cap did you also make sure the gasket was good, if that type mag has one of course. Wet weather and any ignition system can cause problems, BTDT and thats just part of life with a tractor and or farm. Now as far as your problem you probably need to clean the points and or replace them. Again wet weather and points do cause problems

Did you use copper plug wires? I had the automotive type wires on my H with a magneto and it would start very hard with those automotive wires. You should clean the points and should put in a new condenser if you have not already.
