I posted earlier on the RP pistons. Is this correct? Do all the domes run crooked compared to the edge of the block? #1 is relaay off.

Any ideas?

Scott,
Nice pictures. Just out of curiosity I would temporarily swap the #1 & #2 rods to see if the problem follows the piston or the rod. (ie: put the number 2 piston on your number 1 rod, and numer 1 piston on number 2 rod and swap the rods between number 1 and 2 crank journals) Idea is keep the pistons where they are and just move the rods. I have a bent rod sitting downstairs now that would show like the problem you see.

If the problem is the rod, replace it and follow the advice you had earlier about checking for head clearance. My gut feeling is that the small amount of twist you see to the tops is alright if it is consistant. Your 140 head has the small combustion chanber so if you are at all concerned, definately test for clearance.

If the problem stays with the piston, I would send them back to the supplier/manufacturer.

Just a note, I don"t ever recommend saving the pin bushings when you replace the sleeves and pistons. And Hugh, that is definately the later 140/240 series block as you can see from the flat in the lower left picture. Count his head bolt positions... Just a gentle reminder that the I&T manual has an error.

Stan: If the IT manual is wrong, you tell us what is correct. Bear in mind I know it's between engine number 56651 and 103230. seeing is believing.

Scott: I know what would be going on if it were mine, be taking steps to get my money back. If these manufacturers can't make them all look the same, get them out of your life.

In all my many years of tractors and the engine rebuilds that comes with it, only twice did I buy aftermarket, and neither piston-sleeve kit had endurance. Probably bought a dozen or more kits from manufacturers and all were good.

Bear in mind, I haven't done an engine in a few years. I have a gut feeling CaseIH now treat these old Farmalls as after market, quite possibly it's all junk.

I put a set of domed red power pistons in my H the head is still off, after seeing your post I just went out to the shed and checked them they are all straight.I would pull that #1 piston out and check to make sure hole was bored straight. If it is straight you have issues with the crank and or rod.

I posted on the other post about checking to see if the crank is bent at the journal. Roll the engine over and see if the piston twists in the bore going down to BDC.

I'd say that those pistons were poorly made. Have you contacted your supplier ? Other than that, are they off enough to hit the head ?

If you can't return them, it looks like your choices are run them or buy another set. I'll spare you my opinion on aftermarket parts.

Greg
