For my air cleaner on my Farmall F-20 I believe I'm suppose to use a 20W or lighter oil. I have plenty of left over transmission fluid that I would like to use up. Can I use that transmission fluid in that air cleaner? Or should I not be so cheap and use some 20W oil?

Snow does the same thing to the air cleaner pan if you have to deal with the cold white stuff.

Just to add to what Cowman said, the plcard on the airfilter of my 1933 F12 recommends "motor oil" and goes on to say "oil drained from the crankcase is suitable for this purpose". I don't reommend using used oil in there though. Used oil is very acidic due to the carbon and other byproducts of burned gasoline that get by the rings and valve stems. This acid settles to th bottom of the oild filter assemby and actually rusted pin holes in the canister from the inside out. I didn't find this until I started blating parts during restoration. I guess Great Grandad followed the used oil recommendation.

Another cause of the pin holes is moisture. When humid air is pulled thru the oil, moisture from the air collects in the bottom of the canister rusting the holes. I have seen the same thing happen to engine oil pans.

I'm sorry I meant an ATF fluid and not a heavy gear oil.

ATF will work just fine. Plus if you fill it to full it will just be sucked up into the engine and help lube the valves and rings and then be burned off

ATF like Dextron? yeah, I'd think that would be great. 80-90 would be too heavy. The early owners manuals suggested to use the waste oil drained out of the engine. Later we used new motor oil.

Hi,

I would not use the transmission oil, it may be too thick. Use the same type and weight of oil as you have in the engine only.

Andy.

Gear oil is to thick to provide proper washing action for the air cleaner. Use the same oil as you use in the crankcase or 20W, makes no differance.
