International #30 running gear

I just bought a small gravity wagon on a #30 running gear. Gear needs some straightening here and there, but I think it can be salvaged OK with some work. Anybody know anything about these gears? Capacity--how old it is, etc.

Thanks for all of the responses. Even though we got a bit off track, it was very interesting. Idon't know where Ohio 800 is, but I just drove Ohio 555 from Belpre to Zanesville and I sure see your point. My running gear is disc wheel and has the tie rods behind the front axle, instead of in front as the picture showed. Other wise prety similar. It has very few unbent parts and I think has been used pretty hard. I still have a front spindle and part of the reach to straighten. I think it will be fine for me afgter I'm done, and a step up from the homemade gears on old chevy axles I've been using.Thanks again,

Hugh, yup, I agree w/you. Paul, maybe the link below showing a beautiful spoked running gear link could lead you to more info, if so, I hope you share with us. Good luck. I contacted an individual ~ a month ago regarding an IH running gear #30 and he thought about a three ton wagon but wasn't sure either. So, my idea, got it lying in bed (Do I need a life or what) 55 pound bales and 110 per load, do the arithmetic - old school terminology there - and thus I thought, yup, three tons, the number three in #30 wagon and if a revision was made, say a first revision, you could have a #31...made sense...I slept good.

Paul: Well, this sure got off track. Not sure about the 30 running gear, but I'm guessing mid to late 50s.

AHhhhhh the old Point bar and grill down on old 800 knew use well as it took a Hyd lunch to steady the nerves for the rest of the day. And back then A ROPS on a tractor totaly unheard of . And when they did get away from ya the best ya could do is try and keep it pointed down hill and ride it out as it will come to a stop sooner or later.

If i remember correctly that is a three ton gear and not the gear under a gravity wagon . I think we had one back in the late sixtys when i first started farmen . Did ok till the one year when we had a real wet fall then things got ugly could not go with either the SM diesel and 2 ME picker or the 450 D with the 319 New Idea . We waited and kept hopen that it would freeze well that never happened and i got this bright idea that since we had a 310 G case dozer with a pto that we would barrow the neighbors 323 and use the dozer with the 323 . The IH running gear did not servive . The other three wagons that were 6 ton gears made it thru.

I have a little D-2 Cat with a pto. Was it common for crawlers of that era to have PTO's?

Really don't know for sure . The little Case i bough in the Spring of 69 was off a rental from Tenneco and was used to mow gas line wright aways , it had a power angle blade three point hitch and the 540 PTO . AND she was a gasser . All i can say about it was ok not a real power house as it only had about 30 Hp. Used it for light construction jobs some land clearing and a couple ponds Then in the summer of 1970 we got a contract to mow gasline wright aways for Tenneco 4 line at 97 miles each . After doing that job every thing we farmed felt like flat land . We mowed hills that we so steep that a dirt bike could not go up them . We hired 4 yung guys to do the hand work around fences and stand pipes and they brought there dirt bikes done to get to these places and found out that they could not make it up some of the hills SO they would have to hitch a ride on the dozer or the Case 430 wheel tractor that we rented . WE ran and 8 footer on the dozer and a 7 footer on the 430 . First day down there i put 700 lbs on the nose of the 430 thinking that would be enough , NOT on the first hill we made one round an shut down went back to the Case dealer and picked up 600 more lbs for the ft. . A few days later we added two I H weight brackets to the blade of the dozer and hung 2000 lbs on it and at time coming up the real steep hill the dozer with the bushhog on the ground there was only the back two roller and sproket touching . There were two hills that we had to use the dozer on and could only mow down then and just enough power to drive in low to the top draggen the bushhog . Can't remember how many times i slid off some of the hills with one wheel doing 900 MPH forward and the other tire doing 900 mph backwards . Having to len forward over the steering wheel to keep the nose on the ground while going up. Heck even the dozer slid off one hill so fast that it went thru a gully that was soft up over a 5-6 foot rise and down thru the other gully and stopped 5 foot up the next hill . I was not on the dozer my buddy was and the look on his face was a true Kodak moment Both track lock dead engine dead tracks packed full of mud makes for one H of a ski ride . I would bet that he came off that hill doing no less then 55-70 MPH. Was nothing i could do but wait till the mud stopped flyen and pick up the pices . When it stopped Mikey just sat frozen in the seat with both steering levers in a death grip pulled clean back into his chest mouth wide open and eyes buggen out of there sockets.Don't even think he was breathen Just sat there while i ran over to see if he was ok . After a couple seconds he looks at me and says AHHHHH H i don't think i am going to get that last little strip up there in the middle it's a bit slick.

Were were mowen this one section of line and you could see from Ohio rt. 800 and there were a bunch of new homes along it and people would bring there lawn chairs and watch the show while we were on that section and let me tell ya it was STEEP . The worst one was so bad that when ya walked up to the edge with your toes at the edge ya looked down past the end s of your toe to see the bottom that one got mowed with the dozer and that is he one ya mowed down and prayed ya had enough power to make the top with out the brushhog running. . You would never believe it where we mowed with the 430 wheel tractor unless ya were there i could spend tow days talken about that deal .Would i do it again . NO what think i am NUTS.
